Rhaenyra immediately ordered Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) to march on Tumbleton, where Lord Ormund Hightower (James Norton) had built a strong army.
The Battle of Tumbleton quickly became one of the bloodiest clashes of the season. Daemon and Roddy the Ruin (Tommy Flanagan) initially had the upper hand, but the situation fell apart fast. The dragonseed Ulf the White (Tom Bennett), riding the dragon Silverwing, went rogue. Feeling humiliated and drunk, Ulf turned on both sides, burning armies and innocent townsfolk alike.

“Helaena is the moral heart of the show — I think she’s maybe the only character who has a proximity to power that is not compromised by it. I think her death actually condemns Rhaenyra to her chosen path. In some way I feel that it condemns Rhaenyra to be alone in her pursuit for power.”
Phia Saban, who played Helaena, shared her thoughts on the character’s tragic arc. She told an outlet that Helaena simply did not want to live the way she was living anymore.
“It’s a tragedy. That’s definitely the arc of Helaena’s story. But I think, as she says earlier, ‘This is my body, and this is my baby — and both of those things have been forsaken as long as I’ve lived.’ And she doesn’t want to live the way she’s living anymore, and she feels that she wants to protect the children that she does have. She’s just trying her best.”

Condal noted a key difference between the two queens. Daenerys only reached the Iron Throne at the very end, after she had destroyed King’s Landing. Rhaenyra, on the other hand, goes through the experience of having the throne, trying to hold it, and being changed by it.
“Rhaenyra goes through this experience of having the throne, trying to hold it and being, in a way, turned and changed by it — altered by the experience.”
Emma D’Arcy added that the goal was to make Rhaenyra’s journey toward tyranny understandable. The actor said this was an opportunity to show how power corrupts and how good people can make terrible choices.
What Helaena’s Tapestry Means for Season 4
Helaena’s tapestry is more than just a farewell gift. It is a direct warning about what is coming in Season 4. The image of Rhaenyra bleeding from her crown while sitting on the Iron Throne strongly hints at her eventual downfall.
According to George R.R. Martin’s Fire and Blood, Rhaenyra’s reign in King’s Landing ends in disaster. The smallfolk eventually rise up against her in an event known as the Storming of the Dragonpit. The tapestry seems to foreshadow this uprising, with dragon flames and a bleeding queen suggesting that Rhaenyra’s victory will never bring her the peace or security she wants.
