Ryan Condal Explains the Rhaenyra and Daenerys Connection
In the Season 3 finale, Rhaenyra reclaims the Iron Throne in Episode 2. But keeping that power comes with heavy responsibilities and challenges that slowly change her. She begins taking increasingly extreme steps to hold onto her position. This mirrors Daenerys’s arc, who made drastic decisions in her quest for the throne, including burning down King’s Landing.
Speaking about the connection between the two characters, Condal said viewers would notice similarities between the shows. Some connections are intentional, while others happen naturally. He emphasized that the desire for the Iron Throne is a major theme across this universe and shows how it can change people.
“I think that’s wonderful if people draw parallels between this and the original series,” Condal said during a press conference. “For sure, there’s going to be mirroring and echoes and reflections across the two series, and people will see things that are either intentional or subliminal.”
Condal also pointed out a key difference between the two characters. Daenerys only reached the Iron Throne at the very end, after she had destroyed the city. Rhaenyra, on the other hand, gets the throne first but struggles to keep it, and that experience changes her.
“They’re very different things, but I think the parallels do call to the greater themes of the ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ universe, which is pride and power, and how power corrupts, and how far it corrupts. And it can change good people into corrupted people,” Condal said.
Rhaenyra’s Descent Into Tyranny in the Season 3 Finale
The Season 3 finale shows Rhaenyra making several harsh decisions. She orders Daemon to attack Tumbleton and tells Mysaria to leave the Red Keep. Perhaps her most cruel act comes when she orders the death of the High Septon after he refuses to support her.
In another major scene, Rhaenyra publicly reveals the Song of Ice and Fire prophecy to the people of King’s Landing, declaring herself the “Prince That Was Promised”. “It’s not in the book and it’s not in the history, but there is a bunch of talk about how Rhaenyra became very despotic and became a tyrant at the end and was very unpopular with the people,” Condal explained.
The finale also includes the death of Helaena Targaryen, who jumps to her death. Rhaenyra’s treatment of Helaena throughout the episode, including force-feeding her, shows how far she has fallen. When Helaena dies, Rhaenyra simply shuts the window.

While both characters follow similar paths, Condal highlighted an important distinction. Daenerys destroyed King’s Landing before claiming the throne. Rhaenyra experiences the opposite – she gets the throne first, and the pressure of holding power transforms her.
“The big difference between, I think, Rhaenyra and Daenerys is that Daenerys only got to the Iron Throne at the very end, after she had destroyed the city. Rhaenyra has this experience of having the throne and trying to hold it, and being in a way turned and changed by it,” Condal said.
This difference gives Rhaenyra’s story a unique angle. She is not just a conqueror. She is a ruler who becomes corrupted by the very power she fought so hard to obtain.

“This is the reason that Daenerys is begging for a crown across the Narrow Sea, and the dragons are all dead. Because of this story,” Condal told Business Insider. “So I think those connections are important to make to remind people that these two periods in history are intimately connected with one another.”
