The new young-adult series Big Girls Don’t Cry has arrived on Amazon Prime Video, bringing viewers into the world of Vandana Valley, a fictional all-girls boarding school where seven teenagers navigate friendship, rebellion, and self-discovery during their final year. Created by Nitya Mehra, the seven-part drama explores the lives of young women as they deal with love, heartbreak, ambition, and the pressure to fit in. A Look Inside Vandana Valley Girls School
The series takes place at the prestigious Vandana Valley boarding school, where rules are strict and conformity is expected. The story follows seven girls who are all trying to make their mark during their final year. Kavya Yadav, played by Vidushi, is a scholarship student who arrives hoping to make friends but quickly realizes that acceptance will not come easily. Each girl in the group has her own goals and struggles. Noor Hassan (Afrah Sayed) wants to become school captain. Leah Joseph, known as Ludo (Avantika Vandanapu), is chasing the sports captaincy position. Roohi (Aneet Padda) and Jayshree Chetri, called JC (Tenzin Lhakyila), are focused on starting their own beauty business. Pluggy Rawat (Dalai) has her own big plans. And Dia Malik (Akshita Sood) is the rebel-poet who wants to escape the school before classes even begin.
The show deals with real issues that teenagers face, including sexuality, class differences, cultural identity, and family expectations. Ludo’s story involves coming to terms with her homosexuality. Noor struggles with her cultural identity while applying for a US visa. Kavya must deal with the challenges of being a scholarship student in a world of privilege.
The Cast and Characters
Pooja Bhatt plays Anita Verma, the strict principal of Vandana Valley. Bhatt said she agreed to do the show because she was drawn to the story and the characters. She shared her thoughts on the series:
“I said yes to ‘Big Girls Don’t Cry’ because I was drawn to the story, the setting, and the characters in it. As a rebellious teenager who never shied away from speaking my mind and questioning authority, it was such a kick to play Anita Verma.”
Bhatt also talked about the importance of the show’s message:
“What I loved was that within the series, the characters develop a healthy sense of self and strive to overcome gender bias and stereotypes. For me, this was key, as that ensures they become healthy role models for others out there.”
Avantika Vandanapu, who recently appeared in Mean Girls, plays Ludo. She described her character as challenging but rewarding:
“Ludo challenged me, intimidated me, and in some ways even broke me. But Ludo also built me back up, inspired me, and reassured me. She’s a magical character – and I hope that for audiences she’s able to have even a fraction of the impact she had on me.”
The young cast also includes Aneet Padda, Dalai, Vidushi, Tenzin Lhakyila, Afrah Sayed, and Akshita Sood. Mukul Chadda, Raima Sen, and Zoya Hussain appear in supporting roles.
Behind the Scenes
Nitya Mehra, who created the series, said she wanted to tell a story that reflects the real experiences of young girls in India. She explained her vision for the show:
“I think school life in India, especially that of girls, is so underrepresented in storytelling, be it in Indian literature or cinema. Coming-of-age told through the eyes of an all-girls boarding school in its most authentic avatar is what I was going for.”
Mehra also shared what inspired her to make the series:
“’Big Girls Don’t Cry’ is my homage to the best years of my life. It’s an homage to my best friends, to sisterhood, and to the young girls that inspire me every day.”
The show was co-directed by Mehra, Sudhanshu Saria, Karan Kapadia, and Kopal Naithani. The production team focused on casting actors who were actually close to the age of their characters.
Vidushi, who plays Kavya, talked about what drew her to the role:
“What truly moved me from the beginning was the sincerity of the motives behind creating this series. Stepping into Kavya’s shoes has been an immensely rewarding and fulfilling experience.”
