The Independence Day weekend has brought one of the biggest box office clashes of the year. Two major Bollywood films—Emraan Hashmi‘s Awarapan 2 and Sunny Deol‘s Batwara 1947—hit theatres on August 14, 2026. But even before the first show began, the battle was already decided at the ticket window. Awarapan 2 has taken a massive lead, leaving Batwara 1947 far behind in advance bookings.
Trade experts predict Awarapan 2 could earn almost double what Batwara 1947 makes on its opening day. The sequel to the 2007 cult classic is riding high on nostalgia, while Sunny Deol’s Partition drama, backed by Aamir Khan‘s production house, is struggling to catch up.
Advance Booking Numbers Tell the Story
The numbers from advance bookings paint a clear picture. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Awarapan 2 sold over 1 lakh tickets nationwide for day one, earning Rs 3.25 crore in gross bookings. In comparison, Batwara 1947 managed to sell only around 30,000 tickets, collecting Rs 81 lakh.
The Telegraph India reported that Awarapan 2 recorded approximately Rs 3.26 crore in gross bookings with 1,02,470 tickets sold across 5,934 shows. Including blocked seats, the potential gross stands at around Rs 5.44 crore. Meanwhile, Batwara 1947 recorded around Rs 81.39 lakh in advance bookings with 29,261 tickets sold across 5,672 shows. Including blocked seats, its potential gross is approximately Rs 2.46 crore.
The Times of India reported slightly different figures, stating that Awarapan 2 collected Rs 2.05 crore from advance bookings with 62,431 tickets sold across 3,684 shows, excluding blocked seats. Including blocked seats, the total rose to Rs 3.51 crore. Batwara 1947 earned Rs 53.21 lakh from 18,109 tickets sold across 3,477 shows. Including blocked seats, the total reached Rs 1.61 crore.
Regional Performance and Market Trends
The regional breakdown shows where each film is performing best. For Awarapan 2, Maharashtra led with a gross collection of Rs 1.13 crore, followed by Delhi with Rs 1.1 crore, Uttar Pradesh with Rs 61.27 lakh, Gujarat with Rs 44.28 lakh, and West Bengal with Rs 36.62 lakh.
For Batwara 1947, Delhi led with a contribution of Rs 59.16 lakh, followed by Maharashtra with Rs 43.17 lakh, Gujarat with Rs 26.79 lakh, Uttar Pradesh with Rs 23.55 lakh, and Rajasthan with Rs 15.07 lakh.
The Delhi-NCR region emerged as the strongest market for Awarapan 2, contributing Rs 51.44 lakh in ticket sales, excluding blocked seats. Mumbai followed with Rs 29.84 lakh, while Pune and Bengaluru registered Rs 8.85 lakh and Rs 7.18 lakh, respectively.
What Trade Analysts Are Saying
Trade experts are clear about which film has the upper hand. Trade veteran Taran Adarsh told Bollywood Hungama that Awarapan 2 definitely has an edge.
“Looking at the advance trend, Awarapan 2 definitely has an edge. Its ticket sales have been very good. The first part didn’t work even though it was a brilliant film. It was among Emraan’s best efforts. I remember talking to the Bhatts after the release of Awarapan. They were totally shaken and were wondering, ‘What happened?’”
Adarsh explained that although Awarapan did not perform strongly at the time of its theatrical release, it gradually developed a dedicated audience.
“However, over time, the film cultivated a good fan base amongst viewers of all ages. Thankfully, we are now seeing its true potential, with people buying tickets in hordes. There’s a huge difference between the bookings of Awarapan 2 and Batwara 1947 at present,” he said.
Trade analyst Ramesh Bala told NDTV that Awarapan 2 had sold nearly 68,000 tickets and generated around Rs 2.20 crore through advance sales, compared with approximately 37,600 tickets for Batwara 1947. This puts the Emraan Hashmi starrer 81% ahead in ticket sales.
“The first round of the Independence Day clash clearly belongs to Awarapan 2. With nearly 68,000 tickets sold and Rs 2.20 crore in advance sales, Emraan Hashmi’s film is comfortably ahead of Batwara 1947 at around 37,600 tickets. That’s an 81% lead in ticket sales – a strong indication of the nostalgia and anticipation surrounding Awarapan 2,” Bala said.
He added, “Awarapan 2 is setting the pace before release, with 68,000 tickets sold compared to Batwara 1947’s 37,600. That near 2:1 advantage gives Emraan Hashmi the stronger opening-day platform, while Sunny Deol will need a significant surge in walk-ins to narrow the gap,”.
Trade analyst Sumit Kadel also tipped Awarapan 2 to lead the opening weekend.
“As far as the opening day and weekend collections are concerned, Awarapan 2 is likely to defeat Batwara 1947 by a 2X margin,” Kadel said. “I am expecting Awarapan 2 to collect Rs 13-16 crore net on Friday, with the potential to touch Rs 20 crore if it gets better showcasing at single screens. The weekend could be Rs 50-60 crore minimum. Batwara 1947, meanwhile, is likely to open in the vicinity of Rs 7-9 crore net,” he added.
Kadel also said Awarapan 2 had sold roughly 35,000 tickets across PVR INOX and Cinepolis, against around 8,000 for Batwara 1947.
Two Very Different Films, Two Different Audiences
Both films are targeting audiences with very different stories and genres. Batwara 1947 marks the reunion of Sunny Deol and filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi, with whom he previously collaborated on acclaimed 1990s films such as Ghayal, Damini, and Ghatak. The film is set against the backdrop of Partition and features Preity Zinta, who returns to the big screen after almost a decade. The cast also includes Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal, and Karan Deol. Batwara 1947 is produced by Aamir Khan Productions.
On the other hand, Awarapan 2 is a legacy sequel to the 2007 cult classic. Directed by Nitin Kakkar and produced by Vishesh Films, the film brings back Emraan Hashmi as Shivam Pandit after 19 years. The film also features Disha Patani and Shabana Azmi in key roles. The sequel is set for a worldwide theatrical release on August 14, 2026, with Pen Marudhar handling the All India theatrical distribution.

What to Expect on Opening Day
According to most estimates, Awarapan 2 is expected to open at a Rs 20 crore net, while Batwara 1947 is likely to open at Rs 8-10 crore. Some early projections had Awarapan 2 in the Rs 15 crore net range and Batwara 1947 in the Rs 5-7 crore net range.
However, trade analysts believe Batwara 1947 could reduce the gap with higher spot bookings on Friday, a trend that has been witnessed for Sunny Deol’s films. The film is expected to draw audiences through Sunny Deol’s established mass appeal, especially in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.
Batwara 1947 was passed by the CBFC with zero cuts. Awarapan 2, which holds a U/A certificate, had sold over 1 lakh tickets in advance.
Both films have managed to secure enough screens across India, although Awarapan 2 has a slight edge with distributors.
The Independence Day weekend is a big one for Bollywood, and this clash is set to be one of the most talked-about box office battles of the year.
