Anupam Kher is riding high on the North American tour of his Hindi musical play “Jaane Pehchaane Anjaane.” The veteran actor’s production has been playing to packed houses across the US and Canada, earning standing ovations and a new title from viewers: “India’s own Broadway production.”

The play, which also stars Swaroop Sampat, opened its North American run on September 5, 2026, in Houston to a sold-out show. Since then, it has travelled to Austin, Dallas, Vancouver, Toronto, Los Angeles, San Jose, Columbus, Atlanta, and Westbury in New York. The tour continues with shows in Washington DC, Philadelphia, Edison, Chicago, and Boston through October.

What the Audience Is Saying About the Play

Viewers in the US and Canada have responded to the play with a level of enthusiasm that has surprised even its lead actor.

“So many audience members have called it ‘India’s own Broadway production,’ which makes me immensely happy and proud of our entire team. To bring a production from India and receive so much love, appreciation and respect is deeply fulfilling,” Kher told PTI.

The play has resonated across generations. Swaroop Sampat, who returns to the stage after nearly two decades, shared what the experience has meant to her.

“The story is very human. It is about people, their loneliness, and the things they don’t always say to each other. Performing it here and seeing the audience respond so openly was very satisfying. There were moments of complete silence in the auditorium, followed by thunderous applause,” Sampat said.

Kher also spoke about the immediate feedback that live theatre provides.

“There is no retake and nowhere to hide on stage. You know immediately whether the story has reached people. What made me happiest was that the audience laughed at the right places, grew quiet at the right places, and stayed with us through the emotional parts,” Kher said.

The Story Behind Jaane Pehchaane Anjaane

Written and directed by Gajendra Ahire, “Jaane Pehchaane Anjaane” explores loneliness, companionship, and human connection through the interlinked stories of three women across different generations.

Swaroop Sampat plays a woman in her 60s who, after losing her husband, seeks companionship with another widower, played by Kher. Her character faces resistance from her adult son, who struggles to accept that his mother can make her own decisions. The story makes a quiet but firm point about the right to companionship and independence at any age.

Meghna Malik portrays a woman in her 40s whose marriage ended when her husband came out as gay and left to build a life with his partner. The play treats her story with empathy, focusing on her loneliness and her search for connection.

Maya Sharma represents the younger generation, playing an independent young woman who chooses to walk away from a long-term relationship after realizing she is not truly valued in it. For her, self-respect matters more than financial security.

The play features music by Anu Malik, marking the composer’s first time creating music for a stage production. Lyrics are by Kausar Munir, with vocals by Shaan, Sukhwinder Singh, and Anandi Joshi.

Kher also received letters from Josh Stein, Governor of North Carolina, and Janet Cowell, Mayor of Raleigh.

“In city after city, I have received proclamations, commendations and letters whose words have moved me more than I could have imagined. Reading them, I sometimes think, Have I really done all this?” Kher wrote on Instagram.
