The new Tamil-Telugu family drama Vishwanath and Sons arrived in theaters on August 14, 2026. The film marks Suriya‘s return to the family entertainer genre after nearly two decades. Directed by Venky Atluri, the movie features a central age-gap romance between a 40-something businessman and a young woman in her early 20s. Early reviews from critics and social media users show a split opinion, with many praising the lead performances while pointing out issues with the second half.
Suriya Plays a Wealthy Businessman and Olympic Shooter in This Family Drama
Suriya takes on the role of Sanjay Vishwanath, a rich industrialist and Olympic gold medalist in pistol shooting. He lives with his mother Nirmala Devi, played by Radhika Sarathkumar, who constantly pushes him to get married and have children. To satisfy his mother’s wish, Sanjay decides to become a father through surrogacy. He brings home a baby boy named Abhay.
The story takes a turn when Abhay falls sick and needs a bone marrow transplant. Sanjay has to find the surrogate mother, Maddy Jay (played by Mamitha Baiju), and bring her into his home. Maddy is a free-spirited 22-year-old who gradually falls for Sanjay. He resists because of their age difference, but the film follows how their relationship develops.
The cast also includes Raveena Tandon in a key role, along with Nasser, Hyper Aadhi, and others. The movie runs for 2 hours and 41 minutes.
Critics Give Mixed Ratings for Vishwanath and Sons
Major publications have given the film ratings ranging from 1.5 to 3.5 out of 5. The Hindustan Times gave it 3 out of 5 stars, noting that the film “begins with Boomer energy and ends with Gen Z sensibility”. The review mentions that director Venky Atluri handles the age-gap romance carefully and makes it work through the performances of Suriya and Mamitha Baiju.
The Times of India also rated the film 3 out of 5 stars. The review states that Atluri keeps the film “light and easy-going, rarely allowing a moment to become too uncomfortable”. It praises the casting, saying Suriya and Mamitha have “disarming screen presences” that make the unconventional relationship believable. However, it criticizes the second half for losing charm and the music by GV Prakash Kumar for being weak.
The Indian Express gave a more positive review, highlighting Suriya’s return to family entertainment. The review calls the film a “warm, sincere romantic drama that works largely on the strength of its performances”. It describes Suriya’s performance as “restrained” and “one of his most mature, likeable performances in a long time”.
The Week rated the film 3.5 out of 5 stars. The review calls it a “wholesome family drama” but notes that an “extended, uninteresting subplot detracts significantly from the main narrative’s effectiveness”.
On the lower end, Deccan Chronicle gave the film 1.5 out of 5 stars, calling it a “weak, dated entertainer”.

One review stated: “After a slow start, the first half feels refreshing and stays focused on the core plot… Just when you expect that flow to continue, the second half drifts into melodrama with subplots that don’t really work”.
Suriya‘s performance received widespread appreciation. Viewers highlighted his natural chemistry with Radhika Sarathkumar and Mamitha Baiju. Mamitha Baiju was also praised for bringing “energy and freshness” to her character. The film’s dialogue writing, especially in family and emotional scenes, also found favor among viewers.
However, some viewers found the pacing uneven and the second half less effective. The music received a measured response.
The Film’s Unconventional Story and Age-Gap Romance
Vishwanath and Sons deals with some heavy topics, including childhood trauma, societal judgment, and a man who chose surrogacy without really wanting to be a parent. The film acknowledges the age difference between the lead characters, which is roughly 20 years.
The Hindustan Times review notes that the film is “self-aware in places” and compares it to Jean Webster’s novel Daddy-Long-Legs. The director makes sure the relationship does not become uncomfortable. However, the review also points out that the film sometimes falls into old-fashioned commercial patterns, such as solving problems with money and power.
The Times of India review praises the film for handling a risky subject with dignity. It notes that the film “never pretends that this is a conventional relationship, but neither does it allow it to become creepy”. The chemistry between the leads and the warm presence of Radhika Sarathkumar help sell the family dynamic.

According to box office reports, the film’s advance sales for the premiere and opening day registered a gross collection of 4.3 crore. To be considered a clean hit, the film needs to gross around 175 crore worldwide. In North America, the break-even target is set at $1.8 million.
