Prime Video’s upcoming film Babita Singh Reporting is changing how female police officers are shown on screen. Instead of the usual heroics, the movie presents a woman who is struggling to find her place in a system that constantly pushes her down.
Director Ambiecka Pandit, actor Nimisha Sajayan, and executive producer Sudip Sharma recently opened up about why this story matters. They explained how the film moves away from the typical “male cop in a female body” portrayal and instead shows a real woman dealing with real problems.
The film is set to release on August 28 exclusively on Prime Video.
A Cop Who Is Not a Superhero
In most Indian films, female officers are shown walking in slow motion, delivering powerful dialogues, and performing heroic acts without any flaws. But Babita Singh Reporting takes a different path.
Executive producer Sudip Sharma, who created Paatal Lok and Kohrra, pointed out a common problem in how male writers create female cop characters.
“A trick that we miss when men write female cops is that they basically write male cops but as females. I think that was what was so refreshing about this script and this film that it doesn’t do so.”
He said the film accepts the real-life struggles of a woman working in a male-dominated workspace. The character is not a ready-made hero. She is someone trying to survive each day.
Director Explains the Thought Behind the Character
Director Ambiecka Pandit made a conscious decision to show Babita Singh as a woman who is not striving to be extraordinary. She is simply trying to find her voice.
“She is trying to transition into being a real cop. But patriarchy at work is also keeping her down. It was a conscious call to present this character as someone who wasn’t striving. She is trying to find her voice in her professional and personal life.”
Pandit shared that Babita is first and foremost a woman. She plays many roles in her life. She is a wife, a daughter-in-law, and a cop. These roles have defined her for so long that she has forgotten who she really is.
“At the beginning of the film, she is a wife, a daughter-in-law, and a cop. She is identified by the roles. She has forgotten who Babita is because she has suppressed it so much.”
Nimisha Sajayan Found a Personal Connection
For actor Nimisha Sajayan, playing Babita felt natural. She said the character reminded her of many women she has met in real life.
“The first reaction was ‘I have met so many Babys in my life’. And once the character resonates, like this one, it is easier to get into her shoes.”
Nimisha, who is a Malayali actor who grew up in Mumbai, admitted that she is far removed from the small-town Madhya Pradesh setting of the film. But she believes the emotions are universal.
“But the emotions are universal, the challenges are universal.”
She sees Babita as an everyday woman, not an exception. The struggles she faces are the same struggles many women face every day.
The Story Behind the Film
Babita Singh Reporting follows a suspended police officer named Babita, fondly called “Baby.” She has spent most of her life pleasing others and putting their needs before her own.
When her childhood friend is murdered, Baby decides to investigate the case herself. Even though she is not officially on duty, she follows the clues. The investigation takes her into the lives of people around her. It also forces her to look at her own family, relationships, and the choices she has made over the years.
The film is set in a small Indian town. It blends a murder mystery with a deeply personal story about a woman finding herself.
What Makes This Film Different
Director Ambiecka Pandit explained that Babita is not a typical female cop. She is struggling, and the film hopes that people will connect with the honesty of that struggle.
“The beauty of this film is that she isn’t the typical female cop that you have seen. She is struggling there, and we are hoping that the earnestness in the struggle is what people will resonate with.”
The film shows Babita balancing her duties as a cop with her responsibilities at home. She deals with family members who do not take her seriously. She faces the harsh realities of patriarchy in everyday life while trying to solve a murder.
The Creative Team
Babita Singh Reporting is directed by Ambiecka Pandit and written by Amita Vyas. The film is produced by Saurabh Malhotra, Manuj Mittra, and Tina Tharwani under Film Squad Productions in association with Act Three.
Sudip Sharma serves as the executive producer. He is known for creating acclaimed shows like Paatal Lok and Kohrra. Sharma chose to stay away from directing this film. He believed it needed a female perspective, which Pandit brought skillfully.
“I saw the role as, I don’t want to say, a mentor-” says Sudip as director Ambiecka Pandit interjects. “No, mentor is accurate. He was really a mentor. He facilitated the production and was always there if I needed anything from him to guide me.”
Pandit highlighted that having Sharma as a sounding board gave her security during her first feature film as a director. He respected her role while being available for guidance when needed.
The Cast
Nimisha Sajayan plays the lead role of Babita Singh. She is joined by Barun Sobti and Anshumaan Pushkar in important roles. Anshumaan Pushkar plays Babita’s husband, Rajesh Kumar. The film also features Geetika Vidya Ohlyan.
This marks the first time Barun Sobti and Nimisha Sajayan are starring together.
Nimisha on Playing Baby
Nimisha Sajayan opened up about how playing Baby changed her as a person.
“Baby is one of those characters that has stayed with me and, in many ways, changed me as a person. Playing her made me look inward and rethink the relationships in my own life—how I show up in them, what I expect from them, and how often we adjust without even realising it. That personal connection made Baby one of the most meaningful characters I have played, and one I know I will carry with me for a long time.”
She wanted to bring a certain rawness to her performance.
“I have seen lots of women, who have shades of Babita, including me. I was just exploring her different shades from Day 1. That was an interesting process; to constantly discover her.”
Sudip Sharma on the Film’s Core
Sudip Sharma explained that the movie is about more than just a crime. It is about a woman’s personal journey.
“The movie unfolds around a crime, but at its heart, it is also about the personal journey of a woman who has always adjusted, sought validation from others, and stayed in the background of her own life. Nimisha Sajayan brings her to life with incredible sensitivity and strength, while Barun Sobti and Anshumaan Pushkar add wonderful depth and texture to the world around her.”
He added that working with Prime Video felt natural because the platform supports unique stories.
“Having collaborated with Prime Video through two seasons of Paatal Lok, it felt natural to bring this story to a service that has consistently championed distinctive voices and created a home for storytellers and talent.”
