The HBO Harry Potter television series has found its new Albus Dumbledore. John Lithgow, the Emmy-winning actor known for The Crown and Dexter, confirmed he will play the Hogwarts headmaster in the upcoming adaptation. The 80-year-old actor called the decision “not an easy” one, admitting it will define the final chapter of his career.

Lithgow becomes the fifth actor to portray the beloved wizard on screen. Richard Harris originated the role in the first two Harry Potter films. After Harris passed away in 2002, Michael Gambon took over for the remaining six movies. Jude Law played a younger version of Dumbledore in the Fantastic Beasts films. Toby Regbo also portrayed a young Dumbledore in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1. Now Lithgow joins this distinguished list.

The series, announced by HBO, will adapt each of J.K. Rowling’s seven books into separate seasons. Production is currently underway in the United Kingdom.

Lithgow’s Surprising Phone Call at Sundance

Lithgow received the offer while attending the Sundance Film Festival. He described the moment as a complete shock.

“Well, it came as a total surprise to me. I just got the phone call up at the Sundance Film Festival for yet another film, and it was not an easy decision because it’s going to define me for the last chapter of my life, I’m afraid. But I’m very excited.”

The actor acknowledged the long-term commitment the role requires. He will be around 87 years old by the time production wraps. Lithgow called this his “last big role” in a recent interview with Variety.

American Actor Takes on the Ultimate English Wizard

Some fans raised concerns about an American playing the British character. Lithgow addressed this criticism directly during an appearance on BBC’s The One Show.

“It’s an enormous thrill. But I know there were plenty of people appalled that an American should be hired to play the ultimate English wizard. But, I will do my best.”

He pointed to his past work as Winston Churchill in The Crown as proof he can handle British roles. “I remind everyone that I did play Winston Churchill on The Crown and did just fine,” he said.

Lithgow Almost Walked Away from the Role

The casting decision came with significant controversy. Lithgow admitted he nearly quit the project due to backlash connected to author J.K. Rowling’s views on transgender issues.

Social media reaction to his casting announcement was harsh. Some fans promised to boycott the series entirely. Lithgow said he felt “stung” by the online response.

“Every interview I will ever do for the rest of my life, this will come up,” Lithgow told The New York Times.

The actor clarified he has never met Rowling and does not share her views. He described the Harry Potter stories as “clearly on the side of the angels, against intolerance and bigotry”. Despite the backlash, Lithgow chose to stay with the project.

Fan Reactions Split on New Dumbledore

The announcement generated mixed responses across social media platforms. Some fans expressed excitement about Lithgow’s casting.

“I’m speechless. John Lithgow as Dumbledore is already perfect,” one Harry Potter fan account wrote on X. Another fan commented, “He looks amazing and his beard is WHITE and not dirty grey”.

Others drew comparisons to the original Dumbledore. “He looks like Richard Harris when he played Dumbledore I’m so excited,” one user posted. Another added, “Richard Harris brought back to life”.

However, not everyone welcomed the choice. Some fans objected to an American playing the role, referencing the original films’ policy of using only British and Irish actors.

“Oh Warner Bros quite literally need to pull something out of their hat to save Harry Potter. John Lithgow as Dumbledore certainly feels like is going to put a lot of people off wanting to watch it. Whatever happened to keeping it all British!” one user wrote on X.

Another critic wrote, “I love John Lithgow but I just don’t see him as Dumbledore at all… very weird casting”. Some fans also made jokes about his role as Lord Farquaad in Shrek.

The scene appears to show Dumbledore tracking down Harry Potter. In the books, Hagrid is the one who finds Harry on the remote island. The series seems to be taking some creative liberties with the source material.

Fans responded positively to the visual appearance. “Finally! He looks awesome! Hope they give him different costumes for different scenes,” one comment read. Another fan wrote, “he looks like Merlin. not a shade, tho. he looks good”.

HBO has assembled a strong ensemble for the series. Paapa Essiedu will play Severus Snape. Janet McTeer takes on the role of Minerva McGonagall. Nick Frost will portray Rubeus Hagrid.

The young trio has also been cast. Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry Potter. Alastair Stout takes on Ron Weasley. Arabella Stanton will portray Hermione Granger.
