Sharon Stone is opening up about a strange experience she had while recovering from a near-fatal stroke in 2001. The 68-year-old actress says she was visited by five glowing orbs that communicated with her in a “digital language” and gave her a premonition about losing custody of her son.
Stone shared her story on the upcoming debut episode of Mayim Bialik’s Breakdown podcast. She kept this experience private for decades because she found it hard to explain.
What Happened During Sharon Stone’s Recovery
Stone suffered a massive stroke in 2001 caused by a ruptured vertebral artery. She had bleeding in her brain for nine days. After coming home from the hospital, she could not sleep at night and spent her days resting on the couch.
It was during this time that she saw the orbs.
“When I was laying on the couch, sleeping and awake, these orbs sort of presented themselves to me. These five orbs presented themselves to me and they sort of talked to me, but in a digital language.”
The actress described the orbs as “balls” that had “golden swirls” with “clips of light” that moved and pulsed. She said she could not understand their language at first, but they kept communicating with her.
The Premonition About Her Son Roan
At the time of her stroke, Stone and her then-husband Phil Bronstein had just adopted their son Roan, who was only one year old.
Stone told the orbs she did not know if she was supposed to live or die.
“I just kept saying to them, ‘I don’t know if I’m supposed to stay here or if I’m supposed to die.’ And they said, ‘You’re supposed to stay.’”
But Stone made a condition. She told the orbs she would only stay if two of them would protect her son. She believed Roan would be taken from her.
“I can only stay if two of you will stay with my son. Because I don’t want him to be alone, and I think he’s gonna get taken from me.”
Stone and Bronstein divorced in 2004. She later lost primary custody of Roan. She has said the custody decision was partly influenced by the types of movie roles she took, including her famous part in Basic Instinct.
After losing custody, Stone says she spoke to the orbs again.
“Sure enough, he was taken from me. And I said, ‘We have to have an agreement. The two of you will stay with him and protect him.’ And they agreed. And they said, ‘But your destiny requires that we stay with you.’”
Sharon Stone Was Not Afraid of the Experience
Despite the strange nature of what she saw, Stone said she was not scared.
“I was curious, but very much at peace.”
She has never spoken about this experience in any other interview before.
How the Stroke Changed Sharon Stone’s Life
The 2001 stroke completely changed Stone’s life. She told The Hollywood Reporter that a Buddhist monk told her she had been “reincarnated into my same body”.
She bled into her brain for nine days, which moved her brain to a different position inside her head.
“My sense of smell, my sight, my touch. I couldn’t read for a couple of years. Things were stretched and I was seeing colour patterns.”
Stone also faced serious financial problems after her stroke. She had saved $18 million from her acting career, but when she returned to her bank account, the money was gone.
“People took advantage of me over that time. I had $18 million saved because of all my success, but when I got back into my bank account, it was all gone. My refrigerator, my phone — everything was in other people’s names. I had zero money.”
Stone’s Relationship With Her Sons Today
Despite the painful custody battle, Stone and her son Roan, now 26, have stayed close over the years. She later adopted two more sons on her own: Laird, 21, and Quinn, 20.
Stone has called the stroke a life-changing event that shifted how she sees the world.
