September 18, 2026 is set to be an unusual day for the Kapoor-Khan family. Two films with strong family ties will arrive in theatres on the same date. Kunal Kemmu’s action-comedy Vibe will compete with Kareena Kapoor Khan’s crime thriller Daayra. Kunal is Kareena’s brother-in-law, which makes this box office clash a family affair.
Kunal has now shared his thoughts on the situation. He does not see it as a rivalry. He believes both films can succeed because they are different genres and there is enough room for both.
Kunal Kemmu on the Box Office Clash
Kunal spoke about the release date clash in an interview. He said he would prefer not to have two films arriving on the same day, but he is not worried about this particular situation.
“To be very honest, ideally, I don’t think anybody wants to end up in a place where both films are releasing on the same day; any film,” Kunal said.
He explained that Vibe and Daayra belong to different genres. This means they will attract different audiences. He also pointed out that cinemas today have enough screens to show both films. He said the real problem would be if there were not enough screens and the two films were cutting into each other’s show times. He knows for a fact that is not the case.
“So I feel, rest assured, that both the films have a space in today’s market,” he added.
Kareena Kapoor’s Light-Hearted Reaction
Kareena Kapoor Khan had already shared her thoughts on the clash at the Daayra trailer launch on August 31, 2026. She reacted with humour and warmth.
Kareena praised Kunal as an actor and director. She said no one has comic timing like him. She also said there is space in cinemas for two great films.
“Gold mere ghar pe hi aayega to I am happy. Dono picture chalengi to,” she said. This translates to: the gold will come to our home only, so I will be very happy if both films do well.
Kunal said it was nice to hear Kareena’s praise. He also shared that he is a fan of Kareena, Prithviraj Sukumaran, and director Meghna Gulzar. He called Talvar one of his all-time favourite films.
Details About Vibe
Vibe is written and directed by Kunal Kemmu. This is his second film as a director after Madgaon Express in 2024. The film is produced by Kunal Kemmu and Chirag Nihalani under the banner of Drongo Films. Amazon MGM Studios is presenting the film.
The story follows two friends, Hardik (played by Kunal) and Bugs (played by Sparsh Shrivastava). They accidentally find themselves in the middle of a terrorist plot. They are forced to become spies despite having no preparation for it. Preity G Zinta plays an undercover agent named Madam H. The cast also includes Vanshika Dhir, Yashpal Sharma, and Dinesh Lal Yadav.
Sharmila Tagore, Kunal’s mother-in-law, makes a special cameo appearance. This marks her return to the big screen in a Hindi film after more than a decade. Kunal said directing her was a personal milestone.
“For me, it’s one of those checkboxes that I got to tick, something I never knew I would be able to,” he said. “I am very happy, and I am very proud that I could call ‘action’ and ‘cut’ on a legend like her.”
Details About Daayra
Daayra is directed by Meghna Gulzar. The film stars Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran in lead roles. They play two police officers, DCP Ajooni Kohli and DCP Raman Kumar. A major crime puts them on opposite sides of the same case. One officer begins to question the system, while the other takes a hard-line approach.
The film is inspired by true events. Meghna Gulzar clarified that it is not based on a single case but draws from several incidents across India. Daayra is produced by Junglee Pictures and Pen Studios.
The Family Connections in Vibe
Vibe has several amusing connections to the Kapoor-Khan family. The female lead character is named Kareena. Kunal’s look in the film’s poster has reminded people of Saif Ali Khan’s look in Kaalakaandi. And Sharmila Tagore, Kunal’s mother-in-law, appears in the film.
Kunal said these were not planned. The character name came to him instinctively while writing. He said the same happened with other character names like Bugs and Bansi.
Kunal also responded to speculation that Vibe is a spoof of films like Pathaan or Ek Tha Tiger. He said it is not a parody. The film includes references to these popular spy films because they are important pop culture touchstones in the genre.
