What Happened Before Episode 1

Dandivine is an original anime, so there is no previous season to recap. The story begins 20 years after the combining robot Dandivine defeated a mysterious alien threat known as the Aposdoll. The world has enjoyed two decades of peace, and Dandivine has become a popular toy franchise.

The toy company behind the Dandivine line, Kasga, has fallen on hard times. Over-reliance on the Dandivine brand has pushed the company to the brink of financial ruin. Company president Genjuro Shijima wishes for Dandivine’s return, even if it means disrupting the peace that the robot once fought to protect.

That wish appears to come true when the Aposdoll suddenly reappear and attack Tokyo. The people, who have known nothing but peace for 20 years, fall into panic. A high school student named Gekiha Shijima is called upon by his uncle, Yusaku Kuroiwa, a former Dandivine pilot, to board the legendary robot and fight once more.

Gekiha Shijima Steps Into the Cockpit

Gekiha Shijima is the protagonist of Dandivine. He is an ordinary high school student living in a world that has moved on from the era of giant robots. When the Aposdoll return, Gekiha is recruited by his uncle to pilot the Dandivine and protect humanity. Takuma Terashima voices Gekiha in the Japanese version.

Gekiha’s journey begins with uncertainty. He is not a trained soldier or a chosen hero. He is a teenager who happens to be in the wrong place at the right time, with a family connection to the robot that once saved the world. His relationship with his uncle Yusaku Kuroiwa, voiced by Katsuyuki Konishi, shapes his early decisions.

Akane Kuzumi and Kirei Shijima

Akane Kuzumi is Gekiha’s classmate. She originally fell for his good looks but has grown frustrated with his easygoing, conflict-averse personality. Haruka Shiraishi voices Akane. Her role in the story places her close to Gekiha as he is pulled into the new conflict.

Kirei Shijima is Gekiha’s younger sister. She is described as a super-beautiful girl when she stays quiet, but she has a sharp tongue and a tendency to be drawn to unusual things. Her classmates treat her as an oddity. Saya Aizawa voices Kirei.

The Mysterious Three Sisters and the Aposdoll

Three mysterious sisters named Haru, Natsu, and Aki are connected to the revival of the Aposdoll. Nao Toyama voices Haru, Aya Yamane voices Natsu, and Misaki Kuno voices Aki. Their true nature and motives remain unclear as the first episode unfolds.

The Aposdoll are the alien invaders that Dandivine defeated 20 years ago. Their sudden return after two decades of peace catches the world completely off guard. The first episode raises the question of why they have come back now and what they want.

Genjuro Shijima and the Kasga Toy Company

Genjuro Shijima is the president of Kasga, the toy company that built its empire on Dandivine merchandise. Atsushi Ono voices Genjuro. His desire to revive Dandivine and restore his company’s fortunes drives part of the story’s conflict. Genjuro’s wish for the robot’s return is answered in a way he did not expect when the Aposdoll attack Tokyo.

Yusaku Kuroiwa and the Original Pilot

Yusaku Kuroiwa is Gekiha’s uncle and the former main pilot of Dandivine. Katsuyuki Konishi voices Yusaku. He recruits Gekiha to pilot the robot when the Aposdoll return. His experience as the original pilot gives him insight into what is coming, and his decision to involve his nephew sets the story in motion.
