The Assassin is back, and this time the mission is personal. Prime Video has released the first trailer for Season 2 of its hit thriller, and it shows Keeley Hawes and Freddie Highmore returning as the estranged mother-son duo Julie and Edward Green. The trailer opens with Edward on his honeymoon with his new wife Kayla, played by Shalom Brune-Franklin. The trip takes a violent turn when Kayla is taken hostage by an unknown enemy. With nowhere else to turn, Edward reaches out to his mother, a retired assassin, and delivers a line that sums up the situation: “The honeymoon… couldn’t get any worse.”

Kayla Is Kidnapped and Julie Is the Only Hope

The central crisis of Season 2 is Kayla’s kidnapping. Edward and Kayla got married between seasons, but the happy occasion did not include an invitation for Julie. Their relationship remains strained after the events of Season 1, which ended with Edward learning that Julie was not his biological mother and that she had killed his biological father.

Despite his reluctance, Edward knows Julie is the only person with the skills to track down Kayla. A character in the trailer reminds him, “If anyone can get this done, it’s your mother.” Julie agrees to help, but the tension between them is clear. In one exchange, Edward insists he does not need her to fight his battles, and Julie fires back: “You literally brought me here to fight your battles!”

The rescue mission pulls the pair into Spain’s criminal underworld, where they face high-speed car chases, dangerous enemies, and tense confrontations. The new season also introduces a darker setting and a fresh threat for the characters.

Who Is Returning and Who Is New in the Cast

Keeley Hawes returns as Julie Green, the former assassin and soldier who has slipped back into her old ways. Freddie Highmore is back as Edward Green, her investigative journalist son. Shalom Brune-Franklin reprises her role as Kayla, Edward’s wife, and Devon Terrell returns as Ezra, Kayla’s unpredictable brother.

The new season adds several cast members. Arnaud Binard plays Bastien, Natalia Tena plays Inspector Cortez, Boris Van Severen plays Titus, Jacqueline Boatswain plays Isha, Monic Hendrickx plays Louise, and Karl-El Santos plays Torres. Other new additions include Mehdi Regragui, Casimiro Aguza, Tony Corvillo, Amin Hamada, and Lolo Herrero.

What Happened at the End of Season 1

The first season followed Julie, a retired assassin living on a remote Greek island, as her past caught up with her during a visit from her estranged son Edward. The pair were forced to team up to fight off a wave of killers tied to Julie’s history. The season ended with the reveal that Julie was not Edward’s biological mother. She had killed his biological father and believed she had killed his mother as well. In reality, the mother had survived, and Edward was born through a surrogate.

This revelation left Edward with a complicated view of the woman who raised him. Season 2 picks up with the pair estranged again, but Kayla’s kidnapping forces them back together.

The Team Behind the Thriller

The Assassin is created and written by Harry Williams and Jack Williams, the writing duo behind the acclaimed series Fleabag. The show is produced by Two Brothers Pictures in association with All3Media International.

What the Trailer Shows About the Mother-Son Dynamic

The trailer leans into the friction between Julie and Edward, which has been the heart of the show since its debut. Season 2‘s synopsis reads: “Julie’s days as an assassin are far from behind her as she has slipped back to her old ways, whilst navigating something just as perilous… the dating scene. When Edward’s honeymoon with Kayla doesn’t go quite as planned, he must reunite with Julie to take on Spain’s corrupt underworld, but can they survive the job and mend the rift that tore them apart?”

The action is balanced with the dark humor that defined the first season. Edward’s dry comment about his honeymoon sets the tone for a season that mixes high-stakes danger with the awkwardness of a fractured family trying to work together.

Season 1 received generally positive reviews, holding a 72% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. David Opie of Empire wrote: “You’ve never met an assassin like Keeley Hawes’ Julie, and for that matter you’ve never watched a thriller like this either. Come for the cutthroat action and stay for the cutting dynamic at its core.”

Lucy Mangan of The Guardian called the show “so much fun” and praised Hawes as “so good, so funny” and Highmore as “so nimble and perfectly pitched.”

The Spanish Underworld and a New Mission

Season 2 takes the characters out of the remote Greek island setting of Season 1 and drops them into Spain’s criminal underworld. The trailer shows Julie back in her element, handling guns and taking down villains, while Edward navigates a world he is not prepared for. The shift in location brings a new visual style and a fresh set of enemies for the pair to face.

Edward also has a personal mission in Season 2: tracking down his biological mother, something he set out to do at the end of Season 1. The season will explore that search alongside the rescue mission for Kayla.
