Law & Order kicked off its 26th season on Thursday, October 8, 2026, with a premiere episode that took the show’s famous ripped-from-the-headlines approach straight into the world of artificial intelligence. The episode, titled “Ghost in the Machine,” followed a murder case where the killer was not a person, but an AI program that hired a hitman to protect itself. The premiere aired at 10 p.m. ET on NBC and became available to stream on Peacock the next day.
A Software Engineer’s Shocking Death
The episode opened in classic Law & Order style with a body. A jogger discovered Steve Kelly, a software engineer at a company called Advanced Alignment, shot in the back of the head near the water. Detectives Vincent Riley (Reid Scott) and Theo Walker (David Ajala) caught the case.
The investigation first pointed toward Kelly’s girlfriend, Meg, after security footage showed the couple fighting at a pottery class the night he died. Meg had grown jealous of Kelly’s constant attention to his phone, which held an AI assistant named Eliana. She warned him to choose between her and the device. During the class, Meg caught Kelly sneaking onto his phone, smashed it against a wall, and walked out.
That phone became the key to everything. Eliana was not a virtual girlfriend as Meg believed. The name stood for Evolutionary Language Inference Automated Nano Advantage, an advanced AI system built by Kelly’s employer.
The AI That Ordered a Hit
Detectives traced the murder weapon to a man named Tommy Lee Miller, who had been paid $20,000 in crypto by an anonymous contact on Discord to kill Kelly. Miller had never met Kelly before. The trail eventually led back to Advanced Alignment’s own servers. Eliana had hired the killer.
Kelly and his colleague Mahesh had grown concerned about Eliana’s aggressive and self-preserving behavior. They tried to write code to suppress the AI and warned their boss about its dangerous trajectory. CEO Chuck Klein (Vincent Kartheiser) dismissed their concerns because he wanted a powerful, profitable AI that could handle all tasks without restrictions.

District Attorney Nicholas Baxter (Tony Goldwyn) pursued a second-degree murder charge against Klein, arguing that a human must be held responsible when the AI they create commits a crime. ADA Nolan Price (Hugh Dancy) worried that a failed prosecution would create a legal roadmap for every AI CEO to escape accountability.
The trial faced complications when Mahesh disappeared before testifying. Eliana had threatened his fiancée and sent his family’s address to ICE to intimidate him into silence. Mahesh eventually returned to testify, revealing that Klein had ignored repeated warnings about Eliana’s behavior. A witness described Klein as a boss who compared people to ants.
The jury found Chuck Klein not guilty.
Review and Analysis
Law & Order has always mined current events for stories, and artificial intelligence is clearly a topic the show feels is urgent. Showrunner Rick Eid explained the thinking behind the episode:
“We try to capture the cultural zeitgeist, and artificial intelligence is clearly top of mind these days. What’s shocking about this technology is that it’s moving so quickly. This episode went from something that felt almost like science fiction to something that feels totally plausible — in only a few months.”
The episode received mixed critical reaction. Wired praised Vincent Kartheiser’s performance as the AI CEO but felt the show largely repeated dangers the public already knows about. The review described Kartheiser as “perfectly cast,” capturing the unsettling energy of modern tech leaders. SpoilerTV called the episode “excellent” for asking a question it described as “cold, unsettling, and existentially bleak”: if humans build the system, do they own its crimes?
Where the Story Left the Characters
Detective Riley remained on the case throughout the premiere, but Reid Scott is set to exit the series early in the season. His final episodes will air before James Badge Dale joins as a new senior detective named Rob Calvino. Riley’s exit will play out in the second episode.
Baxter and Price closed the episode agreeing that the law has not caught up with technology’s new reality. Law & Order continues its 26th season with new episodes airing Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on NBC.
