Elsbeth is back on CBS for its fourth season, and the premiere episode, titled “Crazy in Love,” wastes no time diving into a twisted case of love, betrayal, and murder. Airing on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at 9 PM ET, the episode guest stars Nicole Scherzinger as a famous marriage counselor whose picture-perfect life is built on lies and a secret that turns deadly. Meanwhile, Elsbeth Tascioni (played by Carrie Preston) and Detective Smullen (Danny Mastrogiorgio) find themselves navigating their own complicated feelings, both on and off the case.

A Marriage Expert With a Deadly Secret

The episode opens with Serena Collyer (Scherzinger) on stage at a packed seminar, confidently telling the audience how she can fix their marriages. She points to her husband of 11 years, Graham (Benjamin Eakeley), as living proof that her methods work. Her secret? “It starts with trust,” she says, as she flashes a photo of him. But the scene quickly cuts to Serena in a passionate embrace with another man — Casey, a struggling musician who lives in a messy apartment and would rather play video games than have a real conversation.

Casey notices a ring on Serena’s finger — a cheap gift he gave her over 20 years ago from Costa Rica. He asks when she’s going back to California, and when he tells her he’s staying in New York, she panics. “I can’t function with you in my city,” she tells him. But Casey knows her too well; he calls her bluff, and she comes back for one more secret meeting. That’s when things turn dark. While cleaning Casey’s apartment, Serena pulls a gun from a drawer, opens his phone, and sends a text to a contact named Luke: “I’m hooking up with your wife.”.

Luke, a man with a known temper from a case in Serena’s book called the “Jack and Jill” case, storms over and beats Casey, leaving him on the floor. Serena watches from a distance, then walks over and shoots Casey herself, making it look like a suicide. It’s a cold, calculated move that shows just how far she’ll go to keep her perfect image intact.

Elsbeth Follows the Clues to a Stunning Reveal

When Elsbeth, Smullen, and Officer Grace Hackett (Lindsay Mendez) arrive at Casey’s apartment, they find his body and what looks like a suicide. But Elsbeth notices small details that don’t add up — like an expensive bottle of wine in a run-down apartment, and the fact that Luke’s fingerprints are on the doorknob but not on the gun.

They track down Luke and his wife Lauren, only to discover that Lauren is actually having an affair with a man named Steve, not Casey. Luke admits to hitting Casey, but he insists he’s changed. When Elsbeth questions Serena, she immediately throws Luke under the bus, calling him a hothead. But the real break comes when the team finds Serena’s contact saved in Casey’s phone under the fake name “Coreena.” That single detail ties Serena directly to the victim and blows her alibi wide open.

The final proof comes from the wedding ring Serena was still wearing — the one Casey gave her from Costa Rica. It’s a simple, emotional clue that exposes her long-hidden affair and seals her fate. Elsbeth and Smullen arrest Serena, closing the case with a twist that feels both satisfying and sad.

A Surprising Moment Between Elsbeth and Smullen

The case isn’t the only thing that heats up in the premiere. Throughout the episode, Smullen is dealing with his own personal drama — he and his wife have separated, and he’s struggling to adjust. Captain Wagner (Wendell Pierce) and his wife Claudia (Gloria Reuben) are saddened to hear the news, and Elsbeth, always the helper, wants to make Smullen feel better.

At the end of the episode, Elsbeth and Smullen share a quiet moment. After bickering like an old married couple all episode, they stand close together, look into each other’s eyes, and the music swells. Elsbeth tells Smullen that if he “ever needed someone to talk to,” she’d be there. They nervously say they’ll see each other tomorrow, and the romantic tension is impossible to ignore.

Showrunner Jonathan Tolins told TV Insider that the moment was inspired by fans and even CBS employees who have long shipped “Smelsbeth.” “I wouldn’t say that it’s going to be a huge part of the season, the Elsbeth-Smullen sexual tension, but it’s not the last that we’ll see of it,” Tolins explained.

What the Reviewers Are Saying

Yahoo Entertainment noted that the premiere left viewers with two romantic concerns: the potential trouble between Wagner and Claudia, and the unexpected spark between Elsbeth and Smullen. The article pointed out that Claudia’s line about “fresh starts” and her suspicious “Yeah” during a conversation about breakups could hint at trouble ahead for the Wagners.
