Dark Matter Season 2 Episode 7, titled “The Pyramid,” arrived on Apple TV on October 9, 2026, and it wasted no time pushing every major storyline toward a breaking point. The episode, written by Blake Crouch and Jacquelyn Ben-Zekry, and directed by Amit Gupta, picks up multiple threads left hanging and ties several of them off in costly ways.

At its core, “The Pyramid” is about scale. The Box was already dangerous when it was the size of a closet. Now someone has built a version large enough to move trucks, refugees, and armies. Meanwhile, a teenager is lost inside the multiverse, a plague is wiping out entire populations in another world, and Jason Dessen finds himself standing at his own doorstep, face to face with another version of himself.

What Happened in Dark Matter Season 2 Episode 7

The episode opens with Ryan and Amanda still in quarantine in the utopian world they escaped to earlier in the season. Colonel Jay Stringer of the Great Lakes National Guard and CDC doctor Janet Sharp brief them on a catastrophic virus called the Black Iris Plague, also known as Hema Aetho 26. The disease has burned through the population at an alarming speed, and the authorities initially believed Ryan’s sister, Camilla Holder, was patient zero.

The truth is far messier. A different version of Ryan and Amanda emerged from the Box weeks earlier and brought the plague into that reality. Both of those variants died from the virus four days before the Ryan and Amanda we follow ever arrived. The government does not understand superposition. They treat the two living travelers as the same people who somehow recovered, and they subject them to painful rounds of testing in the hope of finding a cure.

That world’s Leighton Vance breaks them out, provides hazmat suits, and tells them to find a cure in another reality. Ryan and Amanda make it to the Box, but Amanda is struck by a tranquilizer dart as they escape. Her fate is left unresolved by the episode’s end.

Leighton’s Pyramid and Its Terrifying Scale

Elsewhere in a lower-technology world, Leighton shows Blair his latest project: the Pyramid, a giant industrial-scale version of the Box. Leighton explains that the Pyramid was built by him, another version of himself, and Jason 2. The machine has already helped his team catalog 74 different worlds, mapping who traveled where and what technology each reality holds.

The Pyramid is large enough for trucks, equipment, and refugees to pass through. Leighton describes its potential for humanitarian work: carbon scrubbers from one world could repair a damaged atmosphere in another, or evacuate people from a dying reality. Blair immediately points out the obvious problem. The Pyramid could also move armies.

The machine needs a nuclear power source and can only operate for about 20 minutes before stranding anyone still on the other side. Blair refuses to rejoin the project. She tells Leighton that scaling the Box only multiplies consequences that nobody fully understands, and she walks away. Leighton’s partner, Sandra, orders Blair to be watched because she has now seen the entire operation.

“If you think you can stop the unintended consequences of this shit… you can’t.” — Blair, during her confrontation with Leighton

Charlie’s Solo Journey Into the Box

Charlie Dessen makes the most emotionally grounded choice of the episode. After learning about his twin brother Max, who died at age four in Charlie’s world, Charlie enters the Box alone to find a version of Max who is still alive. He leaves without telling his parents, inspired by an earlier conversation with Jason.

Charlie spends about a day in the Corridor, bruised and asking only for help. He lands in the home of a woman named Laurel, played by Margo Martindale. Laurel has hosted versions of Jason, Amanda, and other travelers before. She keeps notebooks on everyone who passes through and has adjusted her house to accommodate them. She has never met a Charlie before.

Laurel gives Charlie advice that becomes the episode’s thematic anchor. She tells him that successful travelers focus on a real memory of a person, not an imagined adult version of someone they lost. Charlie barely remembers Max, but he holds onto a home video of the two of them laughing as children. He channels that memory and opens a door to a world that might finally contain his brother. The episode does not show who or what is on the other side.

Daniela Follows Charlie Into the Multiverse

Daniela discovers Charlie is gone when she calls her son and he does not answer. She leaves Jason a note and enters the Box to follow him. Before that, she has a conversation with Gabriel, a version of her father in the analog world the Dessens have settled in. Daniela opens up about her biological father, who alternated between kindness and cruelty, and she connects that experience to the various versions of Jason she has encountered. Living with different Jasons has reawakened an old fear: how can she trust someone whose identity seems to shift before her eyes?

Jason Crosses a Line

Jason faces a different kind of threat. Investigator MacNamara has been closing in on the Dessen family, investigating the Box and questioning Jason about another version of his family in San Francisco. Jason slips the substance needed to access the Corridor into MacNamara’s drink and abandons him inside the Box. The man who once suffered when his life was stolen now decides another person’s fate to protect his own.

The Episode’s Final Moments

The hour closes with Jason returning home and finding the other Jason waiting at his doorstep. The setup raises as many questions as it answers and sets the stage for the final three episodes of the season.

What Critics and Fans Are Saying

Reviews of “The Pyramid” have been mixed but largely positive about its ambition. TV Fanatic called it a necessary escalation, noting that the consequences of jumping between worlds have become “very, very real and very, very dangerous.” The review praised the episode for testing characters who had spent time searching for inner peace.

Moviesr.net described it as “the busiest hour of Dark Matter Season 2 so far,” pointing out that the episode rushes a plague outbreak, Leighton’s industrial-scale Box, Charlie’s search for Max, and Daniela’s chase into the Corridor all at once. The review acknowledged that the strain shows but credited the episode for treating the Box as something that can wreck whole worlds, not just individual lives.

Absolute Geeks rated the episode 3.7 out of 5 and highlighted Charlie’s solo journey as “the season’s most human storyline yet.” The review noted that the episode is fragmented and occasionally confusing but sets up the final stretch effectively.

The Nerds of Color compared the episode’s pacing to Pearl Jam’s two-minute punk track “Running,” calling it a deliberate jolt back into the season’s overarching story after a few slower episodes.

A Hidden Blake Crouch Easter Egg

One detail in “The Pyramid” has caught the attention of attentive viewers. During Ryan and Amanda’s interrogation, a character mentions a “hyperloop” system, noting that Ryan died “10 years ago in a hyperloop accident.” The hyperloop is a piece of technology from Blake Crouch’s 2022 novel Upgrade. The reference suggests that the futuristic Chicago reality in Dark Matter may share continuity with Crouch’s other literary worlds.
