Cupertino kicked off its first season on CBS with a sharp, fast-moving premiere that introduced two lawyers who lose their jobs on the same day and decide to fight back. The episode, titled “Michael & Olivia,” aired on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at 10 PM ET on CBS and Paramount+. Created by Robert and Michelle King, the team behind The Good Wife, The Good Fight, and Evil, the show takes direct aim at Silicon Valley’s most powerful companies.

The premiere wastes no time. Within the first three minutes, both lead characters are escorted out of their tech startup, S-Talk, with their belongings in cardboard boxes. From there, the episode builds a legal case that feels ripped from today’s headlines, touching on wrongful termination, sexual harassment, and the unchecked power of artificial intelligence.

What Happens in Cupertino Episode 1

Michael Price (Mike Colter) is a senior attorney and equity co-founder at S-Talk, a rapidly growing AI startup. He is fired after being accused of leaking proprietary information, a charge he denies. In reality, his business partner, Richard Everett (Will Brill), wants to push him out before the company’s value skyrockets so he can keep Michael’s equity.

Olivia Siffre (Rachel Keller) is a junior lawyer just one year out of law school. She is fired on the same day after she refused romantic advances from Richard Everett. Michael, who has always been kind to her, offers her a mint on the curb while they wait for their rides. Olivia then whispers that she overheard the company’s leaders discussing how to fire an equity partner without paying him. This moment sets their partnership in motion.

Michael tries to find a law firm to take his wrongful termination case, but no one will touch it. A fellow lawyer tells him, “Lawyers here don’t make money from suing people. They make money by getting a piece of a startup.” The tech giants, referred to as the “Magnificent 7,” have too much power in the region.

Michael tracks down Olivia at her small apartment and proposes they each sue and represent each other. Olivia is hesitant because of her conservative Christian family, who would struggle with a public sexual harassment case. But that night, she sees an interview where Richard Everett presents Daisy, S-Talk’s new AI product, which speaks in Olivia’s own voice. The AI can even be used for sexual conversations once parental controls are turned off. Realizing her identity was stolen without consent, Olivia changes her mind and decides to fight.

The Courtroom Battle and S-Talk Settlement

Christy Palladino (Ella Stiller), Michael’s former assistant, is also fired from S-Talk for staying in touch with him. She joins their new firm and uses her family’s extensive connections in real estate, law enforcement, and utilities to secure them an office space. Christy brings the kind of practical, street-smart support that every underdog law firm needs.

The first court hearing does not go smoothly. Michael’s wrongful termination case is thrown out immediately. Michael’s father, Bayard Price (Joe Morton), a famous celebrity attorney, shows up to criticize his son and pressures him to give up the fight. S-Talk also countersues Michael and Olivia for $18 million. Meanwhile, Olivia struggles to make the court believe that Michael was fired based on race.

The turning point comes when Olivia calls Richard Everett during the hearing in a way that the court cannot see her screen. She shows him the inappropriate image he sent her before she was fired. Afraid of losing his reputation, Richard tells his lawyers to settle the case with Michael and Olivia. The episode ends with the two lawyers securing enough money to launch their own firm, Price, Siffre & Associates.

Who Are Michael Price and Olivia Siffre

Michael Price comes from a prestigious family of lawyers. His father, Bayard, is a high-powered celebrity attorney, and Michael has spent his career trying to step out of his shadow. Michael is a believer in the Davids taking on the tech Goliaths, which keeps him grounded despite his tailored suits and privileged background. Mike Colter brings both charisma and vulnerability to the role. He previously worked with the Kings on The Good Wife and Evil.

Olivia Siffre is shrewd but inexperienced. She moved to Silicon Valley from a rural Christian family in Wisconsin. Her parents are Christian publishers who baby her, and they hoped she would return home after losing her job. Olivia is soft-spoken and often underestimated, but she is deeply principled. She hums “It’s a Hard Knock Life” from Annie whenever she is nervous, a small character detail that makes her immediately relatable. Rachel Keller, known for Legion, Fargo, and Tokyo Vice, plays the role with tenderness and quiet strength.

Christy Palladino is the firm’s Gen Z office manager. She is a street-smart, resourceful character who recalls the lady fixer Marissa Gold from The Good Fight. Ella Stiller plays Christy with a mix of humor and competence that makes her an instant standout.

What Critics Are Saying About the Premiere

Reviewers have largely praised the premiere for its confident world-building and sharp writing. IGN wrote that “Cupertino reminds us that there’s no shame in being a broadcast procedural when you’re working at the level of the Kings and their collaborators.” The review also noted that the pilot tackles “tech industry sexual harassment and equity disparity, stealing personhood for LLMs, and the fragility of tech bros with their shell games and unethical smoke screens.”

TV Guide called the pilot a showcase of “how efficient, confident world building, and trusting your audience, separates the cumbersome pilots from the great ones.” Variety described the show as “breathless” and “whip-smart,” noting that beneath the fast-paced legal battles is “a steady sincerity” and “deep, probing questions about what a few highly capitalized innovators are unleashing on the rest of the world.”

Decider praised the show for sticking to the procedural formula that the Kings established with The Good Wife, featuring “cases that have emotional stakes, secondary storylines that delve into the main characters’ backstories, and a wicked sense of humor.”

The A.V. Club gave the premiere a B+ and highlighted Rachel Keller’s performance, writing that “Cupertino gives Olivia a lot of layers right away.”

The Cupertino Controversy Over Asian Representation

Before the show even premiered, it faced criticism from Bay Area residents and media outlets. Cupertino is roughly 70% Asian, and more than half of its residents are foreign-born. The trailer showed very few Asian faces and did not feature recognizable Cupertino landmarks like the Apple spaceship campus. Cupertino Councilmember Ray Wang said, “Cupertino is one of the most diverse communities in the Bay Area. To not include a cross-section of our demographic into the script is insensitive.”

Filming for the show reportedly took place in New York and New Jersey, not in Cupertino itself. CBS did not respond to requests for comment on the criticism. The show’s lack of local authenticity became a talking point on social media even before the first episode aired.
