Michael C. Hall is back as Dexter Morgan in Dexter: Resurrection Season 2, and the show is bringing even more serial killers to New York City. Eric Stonestreet, known for his role as Al “Rapunzel” Jolly in Season 1, is officially returning for the new season after his character narrowly escaped Dexter’s kill room. Stonestreet made a surprise appearance at New York Comic Con 2026 to confirm his return and shared new details about the season’s dangerous new antagonist, the Five Borough Killer.
Eric Stonestreet Returns as Rapunzel After Season 1 Escape
Eric Stonestreet first appeared in Dexter: Resurrection Season 1 as Al Jolly, a seemingly mild-mannered serial killer known as Rapunzel because he cut off his victims’ ponytails. In the Season 1 finale, Dexter tried to lure Al to a secluded spot, but the killer threw his burner phone out a window and left the city unharmed. It was one of the rare times a Dexter villain escaped justice.
Stonestreet confirmed his return during the Dexter panel at New York Comic Con on Thursday, October 8, 2026. The announcement caught fans by surprise, and the actor will appear in the first episode of Season 2. In an interview with ScreenRant, Stonestreet shared what viewers can expect from Al’s return.
“I think where Al is going is when you find out where he’s been. I think that’s a good way to say it. You find out that Al has not stopped his unique brand of killing, and that doesn’t sit well with Dexter.”
The returning star also revealed that his character will be shown as a normal family man in his home, eating dinner with family, before spotting a girl with a ponytail walking by—a clear sign that his killer instincts remain.
Five Borough Killer Uses Technology in a New Way
Season 2 is introducing a new villain called the Five Borough Killer, whose real name is Owen Stark. Dan Stevens has been cast in the series regular role. The character is described as a young killer with a style similar to the real-life Zodiac Killer, who taunts police with phone calls threatening to murder innocent citizens.
Eric Stonestreet had a chance to watch the Season 2 premiere and teased a standout moment involving the Five Borough Killer. He mentioned that the new villain’s methods embrace technology in a way that feels fresh for the franchise.
“They embrace technology. That’s all I’ll say about that! It’s a very unique thing that happens in a park, with respect to the Five Borough Killer. You’ll know exactly what I’m talking about when you see it, but I was like, ‘Well, that’s new, and that was awesome!’”
Showrunner Clyde Phillips explained to Entertainment Weekly that Stark is killing across New York’s boroughs to terrorize the city. The new killer’s instant notoriety also hits Dexter’s ego, as the show will explore Dexter dealing with a midlife crisis while feeling jealous of the attention the new killer receives.
