Marvel Comics has given Galactus a complete horror makeover in its new Midnight Universe line. The planet-eating cosmic giant now looks like a Cthulhu-style monster made of dark purple flesh, glowing orange eyes, organic horns, and no mouth. This redesign appears in Midnight Fantastic Four #1, which launched on October 7, 2026, alongside Midnight X-Men #1 and Midnight Spider-Man #1.
What The New Galactus Looks Like
The new Galactus in the Midnight Universe is nothing like the classic Jack Kirby design that fans have known for over 60 years. This version is described as an eldritch creature made of dark purple flesh, with glowing orange eyes, organic horns, and no mouth at all. The design rejects the traditional humanoid shape entirely in favor of something far more unsettling.
The artwork from Kev Walker shows a close-up of the new Galactus with a disturbing, coral-like structure to its horns. Another variant cover by Rod Reis shows an octopus-like monster that still keeps Galactus’ famous crown shape. Promotional material has also teased a form made entirely of pure light, suggesting the creature can shift between physical and non-physical states.
The redesign turns Galactus into something closer to a god from H.P. Lovecraft’s stories than a traditional comic book villain. The character is now more of an abstract force of nature than a person in armor.
How This Version Fits The Midnight Universe
The Midnight Universe is a new publishing line from Marvel Comics that reimagines classic heroes with a horror twist. The line launched on October 7, 2026 with three debut issues, all released on the same day.
Benjamin Percy writes Midnight Fantastic Four with art by Kev Walker. The story takes place in a world where the Fantastic Four are not a family at all. Instead, they are brought together by a scientific accident that warps them in strange and horrifying ways.
Percy explained the difference between writing the classic Fantastic Four and this darker version.
“When people think of the Fantastic Four, they smile. Because there’s a wholesomeness to the series. A big-hearted hopefulness that defines the First Family. Which is why I’m exactly the wrong writer for them in the 616, but the perfect writer for them in the Midnight Universe.”
The writer also described his approach to the series as a Lovecraftian horror story. He has outlined about 24 issues for the series so far.
The Team Is Completely Different
The Midnight Universe version of the Fantastic Four shares no connection to the classic team. At the start of the story, none of the four characters know each other. Reed Richards is a pill-addicted scientist who has been fired from his teaching job. He is haunted by dark omens and strange equations that suggest something terrible is coming.
Sue Storm is not yet the Invisible Woman. Her body is described as something that is only sometimes solid, like looking into an aquarium as she learns to control her powers. Ben Grimm has a completely new look, with grey rocks instead of his classic orange appearance.
The powers in this version are treated as a curse rather than a gift. Reed’s stretching abilities are shown as body horror, with his bones remaining in place while his muscles and organs unweave and flow like tendrils.
Galactus As A Lovecraftian Horror
The redesign of Galactus fits directly into the Lovecraftian theme of the series. In the story, Galactus is framed as a Cthulhu-like Old One, linking the comic to Lovecraftian horror and doom. The character is described as a god by Sue Storm and may be able to switch between a tangible creature the size of a planet and an intangible spirit that infiltrates the worlds it attacks.
This version of Galactus abandons the classic purple-and-blue armor and the square-horned helmet that have been part of the character since his debut in 1966. Instead of a giant man in armor, this Galactus is a cosmic horror that feels more like an ocean creature than a humanoid being.
The redesign is part of a wider effort to make the Fantastic Four face true cosmic dread. The Midnight Universe line is built around the idea of taking Marvel’s heroes and putting them in horror settings. Midnight X-Men features a war between mutants and vampires, while Midnight Spider-Man turns innocent people into hybrid monsters.
