High Potential is ABC’s biggest scripted hit, pulling in more than 16 million viewers per episode across all platforms. So when the network announced it was holding Season 3 until midseason 2027 instead of its usual fall spot, eyebrows went up. The move is a major shift for the Kaitlin Olson-led crime drama, but ABC is using the extra time to let new viewers catch up on streaming before the show returns.
The Schedule Change That Raised Eyebrows
ABC revealed its 2026-27 broadcast season lineup on May 12, 2026, and the biggest surprise was the absence of High Potential from the fall schedule. The show had premiered in September for its first two seasons, becoming a reliable anchor for the network’s Tuesday night lineup.
Instead, R.J. Decker — the detective drama starring Scott Speedman — took over the 10 p.m. ET Tuesday slot. High Potential Season 3 is now set to debut in January 2027 at the earliest.
Ari Goldman, ABC’s senior vice president of content strategy and scheduling, explained the reasoning behind the decision:
“We’ve had to take a number of breaks the first couple seasons with High Potential. In season one, it had more to do with a short first season order. Season two, it had the Dancing With the Stars lead-in, and then get into holiday programming and it just gets a little bit choppy after that. So we’re thrilled to be able to bring it back with much more attention.”
The network wants to give the show an uninterrupted weekly run from January through the end of the season, similar to how Will Trent and The Rookie have performed in the midseason window.
Why Streaming Makes The Delay Work
The delay might hurt live ratings, but High Potential has become a streaming powerhouse for ABC and Disney. As of April 26, 2026, the show celebrated its 300th day on Hulu’s daily top charts. For the year so far, it ranks as Hulu’s No. 2 and Disney+’s No. 10 best-performing series worldwide, according to FlixPatrol.
The Season 2 finale, which aired on April 7, 2026, drew 12.69 million total viewers in Nielsen live+7 multiplatform numbers, marking a six-week high for the series. The show ended the 2025-26 season as the third-most-watched series on broadcast television.
That streaming strength gives ABC confidence that viewers will follow the show to its new midseason home, even with the longer wait between seasons.
New Showrunners Take Over For Season 3
Behind the scenes, High Potential is going through its biggest creative shake-up yet. Original showrunner Todd Harthan stepped down in March 2026 after leading the first two seasons. He left to focus on the Disney+ live-action Eragon series, which he co-runs alongside Todd Helbing.
Nora and Lilla Zuckerman were named the new co-showrunners and executive producers for Season 3. The sister duo previously ran the first season of Poker Face, the hit Peacock mystery series starring Natasha Lyonne. Their other credits include Suits, Prodigal Son, Agents of SHIELD, and Fringe.
The Zuckermans also worked on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival pilot for Hulu, which did not move forward.
Steve Howey Leaves As Series Regular
The Season 2 finale ended with a major cliffhanger involving Captain Nick Wagner, played by Steve Howey. His character was fatally stabbed in the closing moments of the episode, leaving his fate uncertain.
Howey is not returning as a series regular for Season 3. The actor signed a one-year deal when he joined the cast for Season 2, and reports indicate he could still return as a guest star in future episodes. Howey has since been cast in upcoming seasons of Off Campus and Ransom Canyon.
Captain Wagner had become a key part of Morgan Gillory’s journey, with the show spending much of Season 2 developing their working relationship and personal connection.
What The Cast And Story Look Like Now
Kaitlin Olson returns as Morgan Gillory, the brilliant single mother with a high IQ who works as a consultant for the LAPD. The rest of the main cast is expected back, including Daniel Sunjata as Adam Karadec, Javicia Leslie as Daphne Forrester, Deniz Akdeniz as Lev “Oz” Osman, Amirah J as Ava, and Matthew Lamb as Elliot.
Taran Killam is also expected to return as Morgan’s ex and co-parent Ludo. A set photo from August 2026 showed Daniel Sunjata with blonde hair, hinting at a new look for Karadec in the upcoming season.
Season 2 ended with several unresolved threads. Morgan is still searching for answers about her missing ex Roman, Lucia’s involvement in a criminal case ended her relationship with Karadec, and Wagner’s survival remains unclear.
Production on Season 3 began in August 2026. An episode count for the new season has not been confirmed, but Goldman said the network is “still looking at a really full season”.
How Fans And Critics Are Reacting
The delay has frustrated some viewers who expected the show to return in September. Fan reactions across social media have been mixed, with many expressing disappointment about the longer wait but understanding the reasoning behind a more consistent schedule.
CBR noted that ABC is “ditching its winning formula” by keeping High Potential off the fall schedule, but pointed out the show “is not going anywhere”. ScreenRant highlighted that the show’s streaming success “makes it all the better for the series as a whole” because there is “more time for viewers to get into the series on streaming platforms”.
Variety called the move “the most surprising move of the fall” and joked that the network should “call it ‘Hiatus Potential’”.
