The Beatles — A Four-Film Cinematic Event is doing something no major film studio has tried before. All four movies about John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr will arrive in cinemas within the same month in April 2028. Producer Pippa Harris has now explained exactly why the team chose this unusual release plan.

Harris spoke about the project during a keynote session at the BFI London Film Festival’s Industry Forum on Monday, October 12, 2026. The films are directed by Sam Mendes and made by Sony Pictures Entertainment with Mendes and Harris’s Neal Street Productions.

The Idea Behind the Same-Month Release

Harris explained that the goal is to let audiences experience all four stories close together, but not on the same day.

“The idea at the moment is the films will come out in 2028, and we want people to be able to experience them in the cinema during the same period”.

She added that viewers can choose how to watch them.

“Within the same month — you might see one a week, or you might see one weekend and two the next and one the next. However you see it, I think our hope is that people will see all four films”.

Each Film Tells One Member’s Story

Every movie focuses on a different band member’s point of view. The four films are led by Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, Joseph Quinn as George Harrison, and Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr.

Harris said each film works on its own but gains more meaning when watched together.

“They stand alone as individual stories of each of those four men, but they have a cumulative power, which I think is greater than the sum of the parts”.

She also shared why The Beatles are the only band that could get this treatment.

“The Beatles are simply, I think, the greatest band in history and we’re trying to do our best to do them justice, hence the four films. I don’t think there’s another band that you could legitimately say you wanted to see four films about”.

Sam Mendes Calls It a Bingeable Cinema Experience

Mendes first announced the four-film plan at CinemaCon 2025 in Las Vegas. He described it as the first “bingeable moment in cinema” — a way to watch a big story the way people watch a TV series, but on the big screen.

Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman also used that phrase when the cast appeared on stage together at the event.

Filming Is Well Underway

Harris revealed she was speaking on day 180 of the shoot. She came to the London Film Festival for just one hour before heading back to set.

“I stepped away for this hour and am going back afterwards. It is a big endeavour,” she said.

Fans have already spotted the actors filming around London. In August 2026, the four leads were seen recreating the famous Abbey Road album cover on the same crosswalk outside EMI Studios. The original photo was taken on August 8, 1969.

The Scripts and Production Team

The four films were written by Jez Butterworth, Peter Straughan, and Jack Thorne. Producers include Sam Mendes, Pippa Harris, Julie Pastor, and Alexandra Derbyshire.

This project marks the first time Apple Corps Ltd. has authorized the use of The Beatles’ life stories and music in scripted films.
