Hugh Jackman has played Wolverine for more than 25 years, starting with the first X-Men movie in 2000. He returned as the character in Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024, which made over $1 billion at the global box office. Now, with Avengers: Secret Wars scheduled for December 17, 2027, rumors about whether Jackman will stay as Wolverine or be recast have fans talking on social media.

Jackman Plays Coy About Secret Wars Role

Jackman recently spoke with Variety about his career and the wellness routines that helped him stay in Wolverine shape for so many years. When asked if he would appear in Avengers: Secret Wars, Jackman gave a playful answer.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about. I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

He then joked about having a special device to stop him from sharing spoilers.

“I do have an internal chip that is not metaphorical. There’s a literal chip, and if I say the wrong thing, I get shut down. I don’t know who controls that chip, but someone is controlling it.”

Jackman had previously said he would not appear as Wolverine in Avengers: Doomsday, which is set for release on December 18, 2026. The actor has a history of denying involvement in Marvel projects before later being confirmed, similar to Andrew Garfield‘s repeated denials about Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Fans Split on Whether Jackman Should Stay or Go

Social media reactions show a clear divide among Marvel fans. Some want Jackman to keep playing the role as long as he wants. Others believe it is time for a new actor to take over.

One fan on X wrote that Jackman’s version will soon get sent back “to his universe and they will occasionally do new movies with him, probably also with Deadpool.”

Another fan shared a similar view, saying, “Hugh only will be the multiverse wolverine we are getting a younger actor soon.”

A different user predicted that characters from the Fox X-Men franchise, including Jackman’s Wolverine, will get a send-off in Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars to make room for younger actors. They wrote, “I feel like Jean is the start of a new X-Men cast with younger actors, so she wouldn’t be paired with Hugh’s Wolverine.”

One fan kept it simple: “They will introduce a younger wolverine at some point I bet.”

Young X-Men Casting Fuels Recast Talk

News that Kit Connor will play Cyclops and Sadie Sink will play Jean Grey in the upcoming X-Men reboot has added fuel to the recast rumors. Both actors are much younger than Jackman, who is 57. In the comics, Wolverine, Cyclops, and Jean Grey share a famous love triangle. Fans believe Jackman’s older Wolverine would not fit that storyline with a younger Jean Grey.

The X-Men reboot movie is expected to hit theaters at some point in 2028. Marvel Studios has not confirmed the full cast or story details.

Insiders Say Jackman Will Stay After Secret Wars

While many fans expect a recast, some insiders claim the opposite. Scooper Daniel Richtman said Marvel Studios is planning to keep Jackman’s Wolverine around “for more projects even after Secret Wars.”

Another report from Mttsh claims Jackman will stay on as Logan after Secret Wars and is keen to make more Deadpool and Wolverine movies with Ryan Reynolds. The first film’s massive success has already led to discussions about a direct sequel.
