The Glendale Fire Department confirmed that crews responded to a collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian at San Fernando Road and Harvard Street around 4:15 a.m. on October 12. Firefighters and paramedics provided emergency care at the scene, but the patient was pronounced dead there, department Communications Manager Cheryl Getuiza told USA TODAY. Piane did not have an ID on him at the time of the incident and was later identified through a citation he was carrying, according to TMZ.

Police Incidents in the Days Before His Death

Law enforcement sources told TMZ that Piane had several run-ins with Glendale police in the days leading up to his death. He was taken into custody on Saturday, October 10, for being under the influence of a controlled substance. The following day, Sunday, October 11, he was detained again for an alleged assault on an officer or emergency personnel. Piane received citations for both incidents and was given a court date of October 12 — the same day he died.

The Music That Defined a Drag Empire

Piane joined RuPaul’s Drag Race from its very first season in 2009 and worked on the main show through season 8, as well as on RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars. He composed the music for the show’s beloved Rusical numbers and coached contestants through some of their most nerve-racking performance challenges. His work on the series appeared in 23 episodes, with his last on-screen appearance coming in 2012.

His list of musical contributions to the franchise reads like a greatest-hits collection. Piane was behind “The Baddest Bitches in Herstory,” “Shade: The Rusical,” “Rucapella,” “Glamazonian Airways (Part 1 and Part 2),” and “Hot in Tuckahoe.” He also wrote finale songs for season 8 queens, including Bob the Drag Queen’s “I Don’t Like to Show Off,” Naomi Smalls’ “Legs,” and Kim Chi’s “Fat, Fem & Asian.”

Piane’s partnership with RuPaul extended far beyond the show. He co-wrote and produced some of the host’s biggest solo tracks, including “Cover Girl,” “Sissy That Walk,” “Jealous of My Boogie,” “Peanut Butter,” “Geronimo,” “Freaky Money,” “Born Naked,” “Champion,” “Sexy Drag Queen,” “I Bring the Beat,” “Let the Music Play,” and “Main Event.”

A Career Beyond Drag Race

Born on October 4, 1980, in Kansas City, Missouri, Piane graduated from New York University in 2003 with a Bachelor of Music in Composition. He worked alongside composer Marc Shaiman on films including Team America: World Police, Rumor Has It, and the 2007 Hairspray movie adaptation. His production work on the Hairspray soundtrack earned him an RIAA Platinum Album Award and a Grammy nomination.

“Lucian was my friend. It wasn’t always easy. He was troubled, complicated, and filled with rage that he didn’t know how to manage. Like many, I tried to help until he made it impossible. Guilt right now is real. The way he left this life was tragic and brutal. But I pray rest and peace await him on the other side.”
