Michael Jackson’s legendary 1993 Super Bowl halftime performance is getting its own documentary. Titled Spectacle: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl, the film is set to arrive on Hulu and ESPN in February 2027, right before Super Bowl LXI.
The documentary will follow the King of Pop as he prepared for his landmark show at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. It features never-before-seen footage of Jackson and his creative team, showing how he turned the Super Bowl halftime show into the biggest spectacle in pop culture. The first official trailer is already out, giving fans a small taste of what is coming.
What the Documentary Covers
Spectacle focuses on Jackson’s performance at Super Bowl XXVII on January 31, 1993. That show is widely credited with changing the halftime show forever. Before Jackson, the slot was mostly filled with marching bands and older acts. After him, the stage welcomed superstars like U2, Prince, Bruce Springsteen, Beyoncé, and Bad Bunny.
Jackson’s setlist that night included “Jam,” “Billie Jean,” “Black or White,” “We Are the World,” and “Heal the World.” His dance moves and costumes became instantly memorable, blending perfect choreography with a strong emotional message.
The documentary tells the full backstory of how that performance came together. It shows Jackson and his team working behind the scenes, leading up to the moment he stepped on stage at the Rose Bowl.
Who Is Making It
Bao Nguyen is directing and producing the documentary. Nguyen previously directed the well-received “The Greatest Night in Pop,” a Netflix documentary about the making of “We Are the World”. That film earned strong reviews and three Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Documentary.
The production team includes Skydance Sports, Optimum Productions, Into the Deep End Films, and NFL Films. Producers are Jesse Sisgold, Jon Weinbach, and Lauren Gaffney for Skydance Sports; John Branca for Optimum Productions; and Amit Dey for Into the Deep End Films.
Executive producers are Karen Langford for Optimum and Ross Ketover, Ken Rodgers, Keith Cossrow, and Jessica Boddy for NFL Films.

The Michael Jackson Biopic Connection
This documentary announcement comes almost a year after Lionsgate’s hit biopic “Michael,” which starred Jackson’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson. That film performed strongly at the global box office, and a sequel is already in the works. The documentary gives fans an unscripted look at one of the most important moments in Jackson’s career, timed perfectly with the next Super Bowl season.
Why the 1993 Halftime Show Still Matters
Jackson’s 1993 performance at the Rose Bowl set a new standard for live entertainment. The NFL was struggling with viewers changing channels during halftime in the early 1990s. Jackson’s appearance changed that completely. His nearly two-minute delay at the start of the show was a deliberate move that built tension and kept the entire stadium waiting. That moment has been widely discussed online in recent years as a masterclass in live performance control.
Rolling Stone has ranked the 1993 show as one of the greatest Super Bowl halftime performances of all time. The cultural impact of that night continues to be felt in every halftime show that followed.
