Black Clover Season 2 Episode 3, titled “The Black Guardian,” arrived on Saturday, October 17, 2026, and changed the entire shape of the Spade Kingdom Raid. The first gate to the underworld opened, two high-ranking devils stepped onto the battlefield, and the Dark Triad finally unlocked the full power of their devil contracts. For the first time this season, the Magic Knights were not the ones setting the pace.
The episode did more than deliver a big fight. It pushed every major character into a new position — some into desperation, some into their strongest form yet, and one into a role nobody expected him to carry.
Asta: Devil Union Arrives and Turns the Tide
Asta spent the first two episodes of Season 2 away from the main battlefield, finishing the training needed to control his devil power. Episode 3 brought him back at the exact moment the Clover Kingdom needed him most.
A Demon God appeared in the Clover Kingdom while the Magic Knights captains were away in the Spade Kingdom. Citizens faced a crisis with no clear answer. Asta stepped in using Devil Union, a form that combines his anti-magic with the power of his devil partner Liebe. The form erased the Demon God’s magic and pulled the kingdom back from the edge.
The anime debut of Devil Union was the episode’s biggest visual moment. Studio Pierrot gave the transformation a full sequence with a dedicated soundtrack, and the result matched what manga readers had been waiting to see animated. Asta’s return did not just add another fighter to the field — it gave the defenders their first real answer to devil-level power.
Nacht Faust: The Strategist Who Runs Out of Options
Nacht carried the heaviest mental load of the episode. He was already managing a battlefield against the Dark Triad when the first gate opened and Lilith and Nahamah appeared. The two devils injured him even while holding back, and Nacht could not reach Morris, whose work on the Tree of Qliphoth kept accelerating the crisis.
What made Nacht’s position different from the other fighters was his role. He is the one who plans, the one who reads the battlefield and finds the move nobody else sees. Episode 3 stripped that away from him. With Lilith and Nahamah blocking the path to Morris, Nacht arrived at the same conclusion the audience had already reached: they needed Asta.
For a character defined by control and preparation, being forced to wait for someone else to save the situation is a real shift. Nacht’s story in this episode was not about a power-up. It was about recognizing the limit of what planning can do against raw, overwhelming force.
Luck Voltia: The Black Bulls’ Wild Card Gets His Moment
Luck has always been the Black Bulls member who treats a fight like a playground. Episode 3 gave him a battle worth smiling about.
The episode placed Luck in the middle of the chaos caused by the gate opening, and he responded the way only Luck can — by pushing forward when everyone else was forced back. Reviews of the episode singled out Luck as one of the standout performers, with his new combat state described as a major highlight of the fight.
Luck’s progress across Season 2 has been quiet but steady. He is not chasing a title or a personal grudge. He is chasing stronger opponents, and the underworld devils gave him exactly that. Episode 3 confirmed that Luck belongs in the conversation when the Black Bulls need someone to hold a line.
Yuno: The Rival Faces Zenon With a New Form
Yuno entered Episode 3 in the middle of his own battle against Zenon Zogratis. Preview material for the episode showed Yuno using a new spirit form connected to the North Wind, a transformation built specifically for the fight against Zenon.
Zenon responded with his own skeletal, bone-covered form, and the power gap between the two became the central question of their fight. Yuno has been the prodigy of the series since the first episode, but Zenon represents a different level entirely — a devil host with a contract that was finally running at full strength.
Yuno’s story in this episode is about testing whether his growth can close a gap that was never supposed to be closeable. The fight did not resolve in Episode 3, but it placed Yuno directly across from the strongest version of Zenon the anime has shown.
Noelle Silva: The Royal Knights’ Ultimate Magic
Noelle spent Episode 3 among the Magic Knights holding the line against the devils pouring out of the first gate. Her role connected to the larger group effort that kept the Spade Kingdom citizens alive while the gate’s energy spread.
The episode also carried forward the Ultimate Magic thread for Noelle and the other Magic Knights. Episode 3 showed the results of that work in the broader defense, even as the Dark Triad’s power increase changed the balance again.
Noelle’s progress this season has been about moving from a talented but uncertain mage into a leader who can stand in a battle against devil-level threats. Episode 3 placed her in that position without giving her a solo spotlight, which fits the ensemble structure of the Spade Kingdom Raid.
The Dark Triad: Dante, Vanica, and Zenon Reach 100%
The opening of the first gate did more for the villains than for the heroes. Zenon explained that the barrier between the human world and the underworld had been limiting how much of their devil contracts they could use. With the gate gone, Dante, Vanica, and Zenon could finally access 100% of their devil power.
The shift reversed the momentum the Magic Knights had built in Episode 2. Charlotte was already struggling against Vanica before the power increase. Jack was locked in a fight against Dante’s gravity magic and regeneration. Zenon’s new skeletal form pushed Yuno further than any opponent has this season.
The Dark Triad’s power-up is not a small adjustment. It moves all three villains into a tier the heroes cannot reach through normal training. Episode 3 made that clear by ending on the edge of several fights rather than resolving them.
The Underworld Gate and the Two Devils Who Changed the Battle
Lilith and Nahamah were the episode’s wild cards. The two devils came out of the first gate and immediately established themselves as threats Nacht could not handle alone. Their backstory — revealed as two human brothers from the Spade Kingdom who were sealed away — added a layer to the underworld conflict that goes beyond simple monster-of-the-week logic.
The gate also restarted the ancient demon Mereoleona had defeated earlier, and the Tree of Qliphoth’s roots began draining mana from the surrounding area. Every part of the battlefield got harder at the same time. The heroes did not lose Episode 3, but they stopped winning it.
