Tracker Season 4 arrived on CBS with two episodes that moved every main character forward. The premiere, “Safe Harbor,” aired on October 4, 2026, and the second episode, “Switchback,” followed on October 11, 2026. Colter Shaw closed a human smuggling case at the Port of Los Angeles and picked up a teenage mentee. Reenie Greene looked for a new office and dipped back into dating. Randy took on more responsibility. Mel Day finally asked for help digging into her mother’s murder. Russell Shaw stayed out of sight but sent a text that raised more questions than answers. Here is where each character stands after the first two episodes of the season.
Colter Shaw Finds a Teenage Mentee in Charlie Wooledge
The season opener put Colter Shaw (Justin Hartley) on a missing-persons case that started with a lie. Fifteen-year-old Charlie Wooledge (Christopher Convery) hired Colter by claiming his brother was missing. Colter quickly figured out the missing man was actually Charlie’s father, Sean Wooledge (Derek Phillips). Charlie lied because he was scared that involving the wrong people would tear his family apart.
Colter took the case anyway. The search led him to Sean’s girlfriend, Stephanie Rodriguez, a supervisor at the Port of Los Angeles. Stephanie had access to the port’s container system, which made her valuable to a criminal operation trying to erase a shipment from the records. The case grew into a human smuggling ring tied to Russian organized crime and “ghost” shipping containers.
Colter rescued Sean and Stephanie and killed the trafficking boss, Archer, during the final confrontation. A container filled with captive migrants was opened after the rescue. The Los Angeles Police Department detective Bill Kao arrived and told Colter he owed him a favor, giving Colter a new law-enforcement contact in the city.
The episode ended with Colter asking Charlie to stay in school. Colter told the teenager they could settle the fee after he graduated. That promise set up Charlie as Colter’s first real mentee, a relationship the show had not explored before.
Colter’s Notebook Holds an Unsolved Case With No Answer
Before Randy called with the missing-father case, Colter was seen flipping through a small notebook. Most entries were marked “completed.” One entry remained open. It described a woman seen getting into a car, followed by a question written in bold: “WHOSE CAR WAS IT?” The episode never explained who the woman was, who “M” referred to, or why Colter was still working the case.
Showrunner Elwood Reid has said the show is exploring a longer mystery that could run through the season. The notebook scene planted that thread without tying it to the port case. Colter closed the weekly rescue but carried the unanswered question into the next episode.
Reenie Greene Looks for a New Office and Reenters the Dating Scene
Reenie Greene (Fiona Rene) had her own personal story running alongside the port case. Her landlord sold the building that housed her law practice, so Reenie was settling into temporary office space at Maxine‘s firm. The move gave her a fresh start and more screen time with her team, including her assistant Mel Day.
Reenie also shared that she had been dating a doctor but found him boring. She was officially single and dating again. An old acquaintance from her school days, Adam, an in-house investigator at Maxine’s firm, expressed interest in reconnecting. The show set up Adam as a possible new romantic interest for Reenie without rushing the storyline.
Randy Steps Up as a Full-Time Part of Colter’s Investigations
Randy (Chris Lee) became a series regular in Season 4, and the first two episodes showed why. He called Colter with the missing-father case in “Safe Harbor” and helped turn scattered leads into a location at the port. In “Switchback,” Randy again delivered the case to Colter, filling him in on the missing hikers, Leanne and Kayla.
Randy’s role has grown from occasional tech support into a central part of Colter’s network. He researches, follows leads, and often provides the breakthrough when Colter runs out of options. The promotion to series regular means the show can tell more stories with Randy at the center instead of using him only as a quick fix for case details.
Mel Day Opens Up About Her Mother’s Unsolved Murder
Mel Day (Cassady McClincy Zhang) returned in the premiere and took on a much larger role in “Switchback.” Mel asked Reenie for help investigating the murder of her mother. Mel’s mother was killed in a rest stop parking lot when Mel was 16.
Mel explained that she signed up for text alerts whenever her mother’s name appeared online. The alerts usually led to podcasts, transcripts, and true crime forums. This time, Mel found the name of a military officer who worked with her mother in the weeks before the murder. The officer, Eric Jeffries, had retired early. Mel thought the early retirement was strange.
Reenie reached out to one of her contacts. The contact confirmed that Eric Jeffries was not honorably discharged. His file listed an “other than honorable discharge” and his status as “absent without leave (AWOL), dropped from rolls.” Reenie received the file but did not tell Mel what it said.
“I signed up for these text alerts whenever her name comes up online and it’s usually just, like, podcasts, transcripts, and true crime forums, that kind of stuff. It’s probably nothing, but I came across the name of this military officer that my mom worked with in the weeks before she was murdered. … I just saw that he retired early. It was an honorable discharge, but it’s just weird.” — Mel Day, speaking to Reenie Greene in “Switchback”

Russell Shaw Stays Silent and Sends a Text That Raises Doubts
Russell Shaw (Jensen Ackles) did not appear on screen in the first two episodes. His absence became its own storyline. At the start of “Switchback,” Colter left a voicemail for his brother.
“Hey, Russell, it’s your favorite brother. Give me a call, just want talk to you about, uh… Just been a while. Haven’t heard from you. So, you know, give me a call if you get time. Hope you’re well.” — Colter Shaw, leaving a voicemail for Russell
Russell finally texted back near the end of the episode: “Sorry I’ve been MIA. Been real busy. talk soon.” Colter asked, “Are you OK?” The typing dots appeared, then disappeared without a message being sent.
The silence tied back to the Season 3 finale, when Russell took a shady job to keep Colter from learning what was in a government file about what their father did to Colter. Hartley has said Colter already assumes his brother is always hiding something.
“I don’t think necessarily he’s suspecting anything new. I also think that he always assumes that his brother is keeping something from him. So I don’t know if it completely changes. I don’t think there’s anything new necessarily about his brother, new suspicions, but I think that this lingering suspicion that his brother’s always keeping something from him is still there.” — Justin Hartley, speaking to TV Insider about Colter’s view of Russell
Russell is set to return on screen in the fifth episode of Season 4, when he reaches out to Colter for help with a friend in serious trouble.
