Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas are officially set to headline True Detective Season 5, HBO announced on October 16, 2026. The two Hollywood veterans will lead the next chapter of the acclaimed crime anthology, with production scheduled to begin in 2027 in Jamaica Bay, New York. The casting marks the first time Cage and Banderas have ever shared the screen together, a pairing that has quickly become the main talking point around the show’s future.

HBO confirmed the news with a short social media post that read: “Cage. Banderas. Season 5 of #TrueDetective starts production in 2027”. The announcement follows weeks of speculation and a near-confirmation from Cage himself at New York Comic Con in early October 2026.

The Two Leads and Their Roles

Nicolas Cage will play Henry Logan, a New York detective investigating the central mystery of the new season. The role marks Cage’s second major television lead, following his upcoming turn in the dark superhero series Spider-Noir for Amazon.

Antonio Banderas joins as Rai García, a character whose specific connection to Logan’s investigation remains under wraps. Banderas, an Academy Award nominee known for Pain and Glory and The Mask of Zorro, has recently appeared in Babygirl and the Anthony Bourdain biopic Tony.

At New York Comic Con, Cage spoke openly about why he was drawn to the project, telling the audience:

“Because you can only do so many movies back to back to act, and necessity is the mother of invention, you can connect those dots too. What do I mean by necessity? Feed the family, and don’t do too many movies back to back to back. So I think I’m probably going to do another season of television. I think I might do a season of True Detective. That’s OK that I’m the first to announce that, right?”

A New Location for a New Mystery

Season 5 moves the franchise from the frozen landscape of Alaska in Season 4 to Jamaica Bay, New York—a coastal area split between Brooklyn and Queens. The shift marks the fifth distinct setting for the anthology, which has previously travelled to Louisiana, California, the Ozarks, and Alaska.

Plot details remain tightly guarded, but Issa López, who returns as showrunner, writer, and director, has confirmed that the new season exists in the same universe as Night Country and will carry over some of its supernatural and magical realism elements.

“The references are going to be more to Season 4,” López told TheWrap. “It’s the same universe, and the magical realism is my brand, so it will be there”.

López also described the season as “a fun, dark, f—ed up story” that she was eager to start making.

Issa López Returns to Lead the Series

Issa López took over True Detective for Season 4, Night Country, which starred Jodie Foster and Kali Reis. That season became the most-watched instalment of the anthology to date, drawing 12.7 million cross-platform viewers, according to HBO. Foster won an Emmy Award for her performance in 2024.

López serves as showrunner, writer, director, and executive producer for Season 5. The executive producing team also includes Nicolas Cage, Antonio Banderas, Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Daniel Zelman, Mari Jo Winkler, Kathleen McCaffrey, Steve Golin, Richard Brown, Nic Pizzolatto, and Cary Joji Fukunaga.

HBO’s Head of Drama Series, Francesca Orsi, previously praised López’s vision for the next chapter: “Issa has a lot to say, not unlike she did with Night Country. It’s a different milieu but just as powerful”.

What Fans Are Saying

Reactions across social media and entertainment forums have been mixed but largely curious about the unusual pairing. On HBO Max’s Instagram announcement, one commenter wrote: “Puss In Boots and Ghost Rider? Sign me up. Seriously though, this will be an intriguing pairing”.

On entertainment forums, some users expressed cautious optimism. “After Mr Cage’s ‘Spider-Noir,’ I remembered that he can f—ing act,” one user wrote. “Reeeeally looking forward to s5 with these guys”. Another commenter noted, “The thing with Nicolas Cage is you’ll always get a performance, it’ll usually be memorable and sometimes it’ll be great”.

Not everyone is convinced. A user on TigerDroppings wrote, “I just can’t take Cage in serious roles…just me maybe,” while another on Quarter To Three Forums said, “Nicholas Cage is not encouraging. Maybe it’s his comeback role or something”.
