Dexter: Resurrection brought Michael C. Hall back as the Bay Harbor Butcher for a 10-episode first season that premiered on July 11, 2025, and wrapped on September 5, 2025, on Paramount+ with Showtime. The season moved Dexter from the frozen woods of Iron Lake to New York City, where he tried to rebuild a relationship with his son Harrison while a billionaire serial-killer fan named Leon Prater pulled him into a deadly game. By the finale, Angel Batista was dead, Prater was on Dexter’s kill table, and the mystery of the New York Ripper was still not fully closed.
What Happened Before Resurrection Season 1
The season picks up 10 weeks after Dexter: New Blood. Harrison Morgan shot his father in the chest and left him for dead. Doctors revived Dexter, but he spent those 10 weeks in a coma. When he woke up, he learned that Harrison had run away to New York City. Angela Bishop had dropped her charges against Dexter, but Angel Batista from Miami Metro was already asking questions about the Bay Harbor Butcher case. Dexter left Iron Lake and followed Harrison to Manhattan, hoping to repair the damage he had caused.
Episode-by-Episode Story Breakdown
The season opened with Dexter waking from his coma and seeing hallucinations of dead enemies like the Trinity Killer and Miguel Prado. He made his way to New York and found work as a ride-share driver while tracking a killer who targeted passengers. Harrison was working as a hotel bellhop and struggling with guilt over shooting his father.
The middle episodes introduced Leon Prater, a billionaire who collected serial-killer memorabilia and hosted dinners for wealthy people obsessed with murder. Uma Thurman appeared as Charley, Prater’s tough bodyguard and fixer. Dexter also met Blessing and other characters connected to Prater’s circle. The season’s central mystery was the New York Ripper, a killer the NYPD could not catch. Dexter believed the Ripper might be connected to Prater’s world.
Dexter Morgan: A Killer Trying to Be a Father
Dexter spent most of the season trying to be something he had never been: a present parent. He trained Harrison in small ways, gave him a sedative syringe for protection, and repeatedly put himself in danger to keep the young man safe. The finale forced Dexter to admit that his Dark Passenger and his sense of justice were both part of who he was. After killing Prater, Dexter did not take a blood slide—a break from his 30-year ritual. He chose to remember Prater as someone he wanted to forget.
Harrison Morgan: From Fugitive to Partner
Harrison’s arc was the emotional center of the season. He started as a runaway bellhop who wanted nothing to do with his father. By the finale, he was sneaking into a billionaire’s mansion, following Dexter’s instructions through a phone, and injecting Prater with a sedative to save both their lives. The final scene showed Harrison focusing on his own life and a possible girlfriend, Gigi. By the end of the season, he was moving toward a career in criminology and law enforcement, and his relationship with Dexter was better than it had been in years.
Leon Prater: The Billionaire Who Wanted to Be Dexter
Peter Dinklage’s Leon Prater was not just a collector of serial-killer files. He wanted to be one. In episode 9, Prater committed his first murder by shooting Angel Batista. In the finale, he locked Dexter in his vault and planned to leave him there for three days. Prater wanted Dexter to kill him, or to kill with him, so he could feel what his idols felt. Dexter refused every offer and killed Prater on the Ice Truck Killer’s gurney, a final insult to a man who had turned murder into a hobby.
Charley Brown: The Bodyguard Who Walked Away
Uma Thurman’s Charley was Prater’s most capable ally, but she was not loyal to him. Dexter found files showing that Prater had been tracking Charley’s crimes so he could control her. Charley confronted Prater, quit, and left New York with her mother. She did not help Dexter escape, but she did let Harrison live when she could have killed him. Her exit was clean, and she was last seen getting her mother out of the city.
Angel Batista: The Last Original Cop
David Zayas had played Angel Batista since the first episode of the original Dexter in 2006. In episode 9, “Touched by an Ángel,” Batista was kidnapped by Prater and shot when Dexter refused to kill his old friend. Batista died in Dexter’s arms. The finale confirmed his death and showed the NYPD finding his body in Prater’s vault. His death closed the last active link between Dexter’s past life in Miami and his new life in New York.
The New York Ripper: The Mystery That Remains
The finale did not fully answer who the New York Ripper was. Detectives found a file in Prater’s vault that pointed to a man named Don Framt. The cops were shocked by the name, but viewers never saw Don Framt on screen. The Ripper storyline was left open, along with the files Dexter took from Prater’s collection. Those files included information on Al, the Ponytail Killer who escaped Dexter earlier in the season, and other serial killers around the world.
How the Season 1 Finale Ends
The finale, titled “And Justice for All…,” ended with Dexter dumping Prater’s chopped-up body in New York Harbor from Prater’s stolen yacht. He left Batista’s body in the vault with the murder weapon, which had Prater’s fingerprints on it. The police concluded that Prater killed Batista. Dexter also took Prater’s files on active serial killers, giving himself a new list of targets. The season closed with Dexter at sea, accepting that he could never be normal but that he could live with who he was.
