Elizabeth Holmes invited cameras into her home 34 days before she went to prison. She expected a portrait that would help people understand her. What she got is a 174-minute film that has critics calling it one of the best-reviewed movies ever made, and a box office hit that stunned Hollywood. You Can See Everything opened in US and Canadian theaters on October 16, 2026, and it is packed with moments that no one saw coming.

The Film That Was Not Supposed to Happen

A24 produced the documentary in secret over three years for roughly $7 million. Nathan Fielder, the comedian behind Nathan for You and The Rehearsal, was originally only meant to produce. Lance Oppenheim, the 30-year-old director of Primetime and Ren Faire, was set to direct.

Fielder negotiated a “kill switch” in his deal with A24 that allowed him to walk away at any point. He was skeptical there was a film to be made. Days into production, everything changed. Fielder decided to co-direct, appear on camera, and move into the guest house.

“Nathan was very adamant from the jump with me, ‘I’m going to produce this, you’re going to direct this.’ And then he’s like, ‘I want to be there, though, and I want to see how you do it.’” — Lance Oppenheim, speaking to IndieWire

Holmes Says She Has Never Lied

Fielder asks Holmes directly if she has ever told a lie in her life. Her answer is one of the most uncomfortable moments in the film.

“I don’t think so.” — Elizabeth Holmes in You Can See Everything

She admits to small lies like pretending to be sick to skip a party, but says she thought Fielder was asking about the criminal case. Asked if she is being real with him, Holmes says, “I’m always being real.”

Theranos 2.0 Is Already in the Works

Holmes and her partner Billy Evans tell Fielder they want to relaunch Theranos with a new approach. They talk about using lasers and artificial intelligence to test small amounts of blood. Evans calls it “2.0” and talks about bringing the team back together. Holmes insists she will keep inventing, even from prison.

Holmes Watches The Dropout and Breaks Down

Holmes had never seen Amanda Seyfried play her in Hulu’s The Dropout. Fielder pushes her to watch it with him. She eventually agrees. The former CEO cries during a scene where Seyfried’s Holmes screams at Oracle billionaire Larry Ellison.

The Amanda Seyfried Twist That Changes the Film

About halfway through the documentary, Seyfried shows up. This is not a cameo. She becomes a main character in the final half of the film.

Seyfried reenacts private moments that Fielder and Oppenheim could not film, including a negotiation with A24 before production began. In that scene, Christopher Abbott plays Evans and demands payment for participating. Seyfried, as Holmes, leaves the room to tend to her child.

The film later reveals that Evans dropped his financial request without explanation. Holmes tells Fielder in prison that she did not know about the payment demand.

“I didn’t do that to her. She did that to herself. It’s not lies. It’s fucking TV.” — Amanda Seyfried as herself, reading Holmes’s accusations

Emma Stone helped bring Seyfried into the project by introducing her to the filmmakers, according to Vulture.

Billy Evans Becomes the Breakout Villain

Evans agreed to “radical transparency.” He took that literally.

The film includes a scene where Evans works out in the gym, then walks into the shower with the bathroom door open. The camera follows. The scene earned the film an R rating for graphic nudity.

Evans comes across as controlling. He takes over from Holmes while she whisks eggs. He interrupts an interview to demand the cameras be turned off. He brushes his teeth naked while Fielder stands nearby. He threatens people he believes have wronged Holmes.

Tyler Shultz Says Holmes Is Still Lying

Tyler Shultz, the Theranos whistleblower who helped expose the company’s failures, watched the film and had a strong reaction. He says Holmes showed Fielder the wrong blood-testing device.

Shultz also said Holmes looked like “a broken woman” and was “almost unrecognizable” in the documentary. He wrote in a Stat News op-ed that the filmmakers may have fallen into a carefully built trap.

Holmes Called Fielder From Prison

Weeks before the film opened, Holmes called Fielder from prison. They had not spoken in over six months. She asked how he was doing. They talked about her kids. Then she said something that stuck with him.

“I trust you.” — Elizabeth Holmes, as recounted by Nathan Fielder to Wired

She said it twice. Fielder told Variety he still does not know what she meant.

The Reviews and Box Office Numbers

You Can See Everything holds a 99% score on Rotten Tomatoes from more than 117 reviews and a 99/100 on Metacritic. The Guardian noted it is the highest-rated cinema release ever on Letterboxd with a 4.7/5 score, behind only a Radiohead concert film and two TV shows.

The film earned $15 million from just 855 theaters in its opening weekend, the largest debut for any film playing on under 1,000 screens. It placed second behind Street Fighter, which opened with $31 million from 3,575 venues. More than 2,000 screenings sold out. Roughly 70% of opening weekend crowds were under 35 years old.
