Ghosts is bringing a one-hour Halloween event to CBS on Thursday, October 29, 2026, and the story puts Hetty (Rebecca Wisocky) in the middle of a family mystery that has been sitting in the background of the show for years. A strange mirror pulls Hetty into a place she did not plan to go, and on the other side is her estranged sister, Margaret (Maria Thayer), a character the series has mentioned but never shown until now. The special, titled “Halloween 6: The Mirror” Parts 1 and 2, airs as two back-to-back half-hour episodes that together form the show’s first ever hour-long holiday event.

What Happens in the Halloween Special

The special picks up a couple of months after Pete (Richie Moriarty) disappeared at the end of Ghosts Season 5. Sam (Rose McIver) is in Australia filming her new movie, Polar Opposites, so Kyle (Ben Feldman) steps in to help Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) look after the ghosts at Woodstone Manor. Bela (Punam Patel) decides to throw a Halloween party at the estate, which adds a crowd of living guests to an already chaotic house. The mirror becomes the center of the supernatural trouble when Hetty is drawn to it and then pulled inside. The show’s logline says Hetty is “unexpectedly reunited” with Margaret, and the teaser suggests Margaret may be connected to the mirror in some way.

Why Margaret Is a Different Kind of Ghost

Margaret is not a typical Woodstone spirit. Showrunner Joe Wiseman told the San Diego Comic-Con 2026 audience that Margaret is “a type of ghost that we have never seen” before on the series. That detail matters because Ghosts has already introduced several kinds of spirits — ghosts who are tied to the property, ghosts who can move beyond the boundary, and ghosts with different physical limits. Margaret falls outside those rules. Wiseman also described her as Hetty’s “mustachioed sister,” a small physical detail that has been referenced in earlier seasons but never shown on screen. The Halloween special finally puts a face and a voice to that family member.

“In the Halloween special, which is our first ever hourlong, we’re gonna meet Hetty’s sister, her mustachioed sister Margaret, who’s been referenced several times in the show… She’s gonna be a type of ghost that we have never seen.” — Joe Wiseman, showrunner, at San Diego Comic-Con 2026

The Mirror and the Family History

Hetty has always been a character with a complicated past. Her marriage to Elias (Matt Walsh) was arranged for money and status, and it was far from happy. The show has hinted that Hetty’s family life before her death was shaped by control and appearances. The Halloween special adds another piece to that history by bringing Margaret into the present-day story. The teaser shows Hetty being pulled into the mirror, and the show’s description hints that Margaret “may or may not have something to do with” the mirror. That uncertainty is part of the mystery: is Margaret a victim of the mirror, a prisoner inside it, or the reason Hetty ends up there in the first place? The special does not answer that question in the promotional material, which leaves the episode itself to explain how the mirror works and what Margaret wants.

Kyle Steps In While Sam Is Away

Ben Feldman returns as Kyle and is now a series regular. Kyle shares Sam’s ability to see and talk to ghosts, so he becomes the person who can help Jay manage the spirits while Sam is overseas. That setup gives the Halloween special a different pattern from a normal episode. Sam is not at Woodstone, so the ghosts have to rely on Kyle and Jay for contact with the living world. Feldman’s first episode as a full-time cast member puts him in the middle of the holiday chaos, with Bela’s party happening in the same house and Hetty stuck inside a mirror.

Bela’s Party and Pete’s Missing Story

Bela throwing a Halloween party at Woodstone adds a second source of disorder. The house is already full of ghosts, and now it is full of living guests in costumes. The special also carries forward Pete’s disappearance, which ended Season 5 on a cliffhanger. Pete vanished after being outside the ghost boundary for too long, and the Halloween special is set a couple of months after that moment. Promotional images for the special show the other ghosts together but do not show Pete, leaving his whereabouts as one of the open threads that the episode may address.

What the Showrunners Said

Joe Wiseman and Joe Port spoke about the holiday specials at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, where they confirmed Margaret’s introduction and described her as a new ghost type. Port also said the Christmas special later in the year is inspired by Die Hard, which gives fans a hint about the tone of the second holiday event. The Halloween special is the first of the two, and it is written by Guy Endore-Kaiser and Rupinder Gill, with Cortney Carrillo directing both parts.

Trevor (Asher Grodman) sums up the situation in the teaser with a line that fits the episode’s premise: “Ghosts in the mirror, people. Things are getting weird”.

Fan Reactions to the Mirror Teaser

The teaser has already given fans a lot to talk about. A Tumblr post about the trailer picked up on the personal side of the mirror moment, noting that Hetty was pulled into the mirror by her sister after the two seemed to share a tender moment beforehand. That reaction points to the part of the special that goes beyond the supernatural mechanics: Hetty and Margaret have a history, and the mirror forces them to face it.

“So…anyone gonna talk about how Hetty was just pulled into the mirror in the new trailer?!? By her sister mind you. Who she seemed to be having a tender moment with prior.” — Tumblr user comment on the Ghosts Halloween special teaser

Ghosts returns with regular Season 6 episodes in 2027, but the Halloween special arrives first as a standalone one-hour event. The episode airs on CBS on October 29, 2026, and streams on Paramount+ the following day.
