HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series has added three more names to its Season 1 cast, and the announcement confirms a book character the original films never showed on screen. Harry Gilby will play Charlie Weasley, while Jasper Talbot and Hannah Chinn have been cast as James Potter and Lily Potter. The news arrived on October 27, 2026, just under two months before the show’s December 25, 2026 premiere on HBO and HBO Max.
The casting also brings a noticeable change to the Potter family’s on-screen look, specifically the eye color detail that book readers have discussed for years.
Charlie Weasley Finally Gets His Screen Moment
Charlie Weasley is the second-oldest son of Arthur and Molly Weasley, and he works with dragons in Romania. He is mentioned throughout J.K. Rowling’s books but never appeared as a proper character in the eight original films. The movies only hinted at him through family photographs and passing mentions.
HBO had already teased Charlie’s arrival in August 2025, when it shared a picture of the Weasley children with a caption that read, “Charlie’s in Romania at the moment but will be joining us soon enough”. The new announcement makes that tease official. Harry Gilby is known for his work in The Last Kingdom, Tolkien, and Boarders.
Charlie’s inclusion signals that the series is building out the Weasley family with more care than the films did. Every other Weasley sibling appeared on screen in the movies, which made Charlie’s absence a long-running talking point among book readers.
The Potter Family Eye Color Switch
The bigger change involves James and Lily Potter, Harry’s parents. In the books, Harry has green eyes that match his mother Lily’s eyes, while James has hazel eyes. The films could not match this detail because Daniel Radcliffe had blue eyes and could not wear colored contact lenses, while Geraldine Somerville, who played Lily, had brown eyes.
HBO’s series keeps some of that movie problem but shifts the resemblance. Dominic McLaughlin, who plays Harry, has blue eyes. Hannah Chinn, the new Lily, has hazel eyes. Jasper Talbot, the new James, has blue eyes.
That means the visual link between Harry and his mother is not restored. Instead, the show gives Harry a matching eye color with his father. The change is small on paper, but it touches a detail that matters to readers because Lily’s eyes are tied to Harry’s identity and to Severus Snape’s story.
Younger James and Lily Potter
The new actors are also closer in age to the characters’ book ages than the film actors were. In the novels, James and Lily were 21 years old when they died. The original films cast actors in their 30s and 40s for the roles, which made Harry’s parents look older than the story intended.
Francesca Gardiner, the showrunner, and Mark Mylod, who directs multiple episodes, had said the series would stick to the correct canonical ages for its characters. Paapa Essiedu’s Severus Snape is in his 30s, and the younger Potter parents follow that same approach.
When and Where to Watch
Season 1 is titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and will have eight episodes. It premieres on December 25, 2026, on HBO and HBO Max in the United States. Viewers in the UK, Canada, Australia, India, and other global markets will watch through their local HBO or HBO Max platforms and partner services.
Season 2, based on Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, is already filming at Leavesden Studios outside London. Kit Harington joined the second season as Gilderoy Lockhart, replacing Nicholas Hoult, who left the role due to scheduling conflicts.
