Kartik Aaryan has signed on to play the lead role in filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri’s upcoming military drama Operation Sindoor. The film draws from retired Lieutenant General K.J.S. ‘Tiny’ Dhillon’s book about India’s deep strikes inside Pakistan after the April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack. This is the first time Aaryan and Agnihotri are working together. The project was announced in March 2026, and Aaryan will begin work on it after finishing Shimit Amin’s Captain India.
The Casting and What It Means
Aaryan’s involvement was reported by Variety India on October 28, 2026 and has been carried by multiple Indian outlets including Times of India, News18, Times Now, Deccan Chronicle, Mid-Day, WION, and The Daily Jagran. The reports describe the film as a real-life military drama and confirm Aaryan as the lead. No other cast members have been announced yet.
For Aaryan, the role marks another step into real-world stories after Chandu Champion, the 2024 film based on Paralympic gold medallist Murlikant Petkar, which earned him his first National Award for Best Actor. He is currently filming Captain India, set against the Yemen conflict, and will move to Operation Sindoor once that project wraps.
“Rooted in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack and backed by extensive, ground-level research in collaboration with multiple wings of the Indian Armed Forces, this is a story drawn from reality… not to create noise, but to confront it: with facts, with clarity, and the magic of cinema.” — Vivek Agnihotri, announcing the film on social media in March 2026
The Story Behind Operation Sindoor
The film is based on Lieutenant General K.J.S. ‘Tiny’ Dhillon’s book Operation Sindoor: The Untold Story of India’s Deep Strikes Inside Pakistan. The book and the film focus on India’s military operation launched on May 7, 2025, following the April 22, 2025 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, in which 26 people were killed, most of them tourists.
Operation Sindoor was India’s counter-terrorism campaign targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. The film is set to explore the planning, execution, and aftermath of those strikes, which Agnihotri has said reshaped security in the subcontinent.
“Bhushan Kumar and I have joined forces for #OperationSindoor— a story that redefined security in the subcontinent and exposed Pakistan’s nuclear bluff.” — Vivek Agnihotri on social media
Who Is Making the Film
Operation Sindoor is jointly produced by Bhushan Kumar’s T-Series and Vivek Agnihotri’s I Am Buddha Productions. The film is directed by Agnihotri, whose previous credits include The Tashkent Files, The Kashmir Files, The Vaccine War, and The Bengal Files.
Bhushan Kumar said the story demanded to be told with responsibility.
“Some stories are not chosen, they choose you. Operation Sindoor is one such story, a story that has to be documented truthfully.” — Bhushan Kumar
Agnihotri has said the film is built on ground-level research with multiple wings of the Indian Armed Forces. The makers have stressed that factual accuracy is central to the project.
Release Date and Production Timeline
Operation Sindoor does not have a release date yet. Aaryan is currently shooting Captain India, and work on Operation Sindoor will begin only after that film is completed. Reports from October 28, 2026 confirm that the production schedule and release date are yet to be officially confirmed by the makers or the actor.
For global audiences, this means the film is in the pre-production and casting stage as of late October 2026. No filming start date, theatrical window, or streaming partner has been announced.
Kartik Aaryan’s Growing List of Real-Life Projects
Operation Sindoor adds to a busy slate for Aaryan. His upcoming projects include:
- Naagzilla, a fantasy film produced by Karan Johar, scheduled for release on February 12, 2027.
- An untitled Anurag Basu romantic drama opposite Sreeleela, set for release on April 30, 2027.
- A Kabir Khan sports biopic inspired by Kashmiri kickboxer Tajamul Islam.
- Bhool Bhulaiyaa 4, with Anees Bazmee attached.
- Captain India, directed by Shimit Amin, based on Operation Raahat, India’s evacuation mission during the 2015 Yemen crisis.
Aaryan’s move into military and biographical dramas follows the National Award win for Chandu Champion, which was released in 2024. In that film, he played a character based on Murlikant Petkar, India’s first individual Paralympic gold medallist.

Why the Film Is Being Made Now
The Pahalgam terror attack and India’s response have become a major subject in Indian public conversation. The May 7, 2025 operation was one of the most significant military responses in recent years, and the book by Lt Gen Dhillon offers a first-hand account from a senior military figure.
Agnihotri has described the film as an effort to present the operation with clarity rather than noise.
“The reality is far more complex, far more precise, and far more unsettling than what the public sees.” — Vivek Agnihotri
The project is being positioned as a researched account of events, with input from the armed forces, rather than a fictionalised war drama. The film’s title comes directly from the military operation itself.
