Two hockey romances have become the most-watched romance titles on their respective streaming platforms in the past year. Heated Rivalry pulled in 10.6 million U.S. viewers per episode on HBO Max, and Off Campus reached 36 million viewers in its first 12 days on Prime Video, becoming the streamer’s third most-watched debut series of all time. Neither show leans on a drawn-out love triangle to keep audiences hooked. The formula that is working instead is simpler: put two people with real obstacles in a room, let them talk, and let the sport sit in the background.

The Love Triangle That Almost Got in the Way

Off Campus Season 1 adapted Elle Kennedy’s novel The Deal, which follows music student Hannah Wells (Ella Bright) and Briar University hockey star Garrett Graham (Belmont Cameli). In the show, Hannah starts out with a crush on musician Justin Kohl (Josh Heuston), and Garrett agrees to fake-date her so Justin will notice her. That setup created a three-person dynamic across the first season, with Hannah pulled between the sensitive musician and the blunt hockey player.

The triangle did not survive the season. Josh Heuston is not returning for Season 2, and creator Louisa Levy confirmed that the storyline keeping Justin connected to Hannah and Garrett has closed. What replaced the triangle was a sharper focus on Hannah and Garrett’s relationship, including Hannah’s past experience with s*xual trauma and Garrett’s history with his abusive father. Those storylines gave the couple something to work through together rather than something to fight over.

Why ‘Heated Rivalry’ Skips the Triangle Entirely

Heated Rivalry never had a triangle to begin with. The series, based on Rachel Reid‘s Game Changers novels, follows rival NHL captains Shane Hollander (Hudson Williams) and Ilya Rozanov (Connor Storrie) as they move from secret hookups to a deeply emotional relationship over several years. The conflict is not another person. It is the closet, the press, and the fear of what coming out would do to two professional hockey careers.

That choice has resonated. A fan told The New Indian Express that the show works because “there’s build up, yearning and no immediate emotional gratification.” Another viewer pointed to the way the series handles consent, with Ilya “constant, gentle, check-ins” during intimate scenes. The absence of a love triangle did not make the show less dramatic. It made the drama personal.

What the Winning Formula Actually Looks Like

Both shows share a structure that puts emotional vulnerability ahead of romantic competition. Elle Kennedy described the appeal of hockey romance in a Publishers Weekly interview: “For me, it’s just such a rough physical sport, and so intense. You have these guys who are your romantic heroes and on the ice, they’re these big tough guys, but then you get to watch them be so gentle and soft with their ladies. I like that little dichotomy.”

The sport provides the stakes. The relationship provides the payoff. Heated Rivalry uses the seven-year timeline of Shane and Ilya’s secret relationship to build tension through distance and longing rather than through a third person. Off Campus uses Garrett’s commitment to Hannah and his willingness to confront his own past as the engine of the season. The triangle in Off Campus existed, but it was resolved early enough that the show could spend its final episodes on the couple rather than on the choice.

Fans Made Their Choice Clear

Audience reaction to the Off Campus triangle was blunt. On X, viewers called Justin’s storyline a distraction from Hannah and Garrett’s relationship. One user wrote, “Thank God, super annoying.” Another said, “You won’t be missed at all.” The show’s creator listened. Levy told TV Guide that Heuston is “not [in] next season” and explained that the love triangle that kept Justin connected to the main couple has ended.

For Heated Rivalry, the response went beyond streaming numbers. Women on TikTok began calling hockey arenas “boy aquariums,” a joke about watching male players behind the glass like fish in a tank. The trend started as a reaction to hockey romance books and shows, and it has pushed more women into real arenas. Canberra Brave, an Australian Ice Hockey League team, reported that more than 67 per cent of tickets this year were purchased by women. Female NHL viewership rose 66 per cent on TNT Sports and 106 per cent on ESPN during the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs, with the league pointing to the popularity of both shows as a factor.

The Numbers Behind the Shift

Sports romance as a publishing category recorded triple-digit growth in print sales in 2025, according to Circana data cited by The New York Times. Romance fiction sales overall were up 49 per cent over a three-year period ending in 2025.Heated Rivalry became HBO Max’s top acquired scripted series ever, more than doubling its U.S. audience after its finale in December 2025.Off Campus outperformed The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and Fallout in its first 12 days, a metric Prime Video shared publicly.

The pattern extends beyond these two titles. Netflix is developing an adaptation of Hannah Grace‘s Icebreaker, and a wave of sports romances covering rowing, Formula 1, baseball, and rugby are in various stages of development for television. The love triangle has not disappeared from television. It has stopped being the default setting for sports romance.

The sports romance boom has moved past the will-they-or-won’t-they question. Off Campus and Heated Rivalry did not need a third person standing between their leads. They needed two people willing to be honest with each other, and viewers showed up by the millions to watch that happen. For more entertainment news and streaming updates, keep reading VvipTimes.
