Jacquelyn Smith was a 54-year-old electrical engineer who spent her final moments in a car with her husband and stepdaughter on a rainy Baltimore night in December 2018. The story her husband told police—that a panhandler stabbed her while she tried to help a woman holding a baby—made national headlines and even prompted Oprah Winfrey to say she would rethink giving cash to people on the street. That story was a lie. Dateline NBC returned to the case with a new episode, “Deadly Intersection,” which aired on Friday, November 6, 2026, at 9 p.m. on WBAL-TV 11 and other NBC stations, with Lester Holt reporting.

The Night Jacquelyn Smith Died

Jacquelyn Smith was riding in a 2012 Audi A7 with her husband, Keith Smith, and her stepdaughter, Valeria Smith, in the early morning hours of December 1, 2018. The family had been out celebrating Valeria’s birthday at the American Legion Hall in Baltimore’s Madison Park neighborhood and left shortly before midnight.

Keith Smith told police they were driving through the Johnston Square neighborhood around 12:30 a.m. when Jacquelyn saw a woman on the side of the road holding what looked like a baby and a cardboard sign asking for help feeding her child. Keith said his wife felt sorry for the woman because it was cold and raining. Jacquelyn rolled down her window and handed the woman $10. A man then ran up to the car, tried to grab Jacquelyn’s necklace, and stabbed her in the chest before running away with the woman. The family rushed Jacquelyn to Johns Hopkins Hospital, where she died from her injuries. The medical examiner later ruled her death a homicide caused by five stab wounds to the chest and an additional stab wound to her right arm.

The Story That Fell Apart

Detectives went to the 1000 block of Valley Street, where Keith said the attack happened, but found no crime scene, no evidence, no surveillance footage, and no witnesses. They learned that panhandlers did not usually gather on that block, which had little foot traffic and many vacant houses. Police reviewed surveillance video along the route Keith claimed they took and found no sign of his car or the panhandlers. Assistant State’s Attorney Shaundria Hanna later told jurors: “The defendant’s vehicle and panhandlers are nowhere to be found. There’s no panhandlers; it was all made up”.

Arrested at the Border

On March 3, 2019, Keith Smith and Valeria Smith were arrested in Combes, Texas, about 35 miles from a border crossing with Mexico. Police described the arrest as stopping a desperate dash to Mexico. Michael Harrison, then Baltimore’s acting police commissioner, said at a news conference: “We now know that that was not true. It was not a panhandler”. Valeria Smith later pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact. She admitted to ditching her stepmother’s purse at a bus stop to support the panhandler story and agreed to testify against her father in exchange for a five-year prison sentence.

What Valeria Smith Told the Jury

Valeria Smith testified that her father drove them into a park while Jacquelyn dozed in the front passenger seat and then stabbed her. Afterward, Keith coached his daughter on what to tell police. “The story was supposed to be it was a homeless person, or two homeless people, that had a baby, and Mrs. Jacquelyn was supposed to feel sorry for them,” Valeria told the jury. “When she gave them the money, they stabbed her”.

Keith Smith’s Conviction and Sentence

A Baltimore jury deliberated for about five hours over two days before convicting Keith Smith of first-degree murder and a weapons charge on December 9, 2021. On February 28, 2022, Circuit Judge Jennifer Schiffer sentenced him to life in prison for murder plus three years to be served concurrently for the use of a deadly weapon. Judge Schiffer said she had never seen facts that “showed more premeditation, willfulness and intent,” adding: “The crime for which the defendant was convicted was the reason the maximum sentence for murder was created”. Keith Smith appeared by video from jail and apologized to Jacquelyn’s family but maintained he was innocent.

The Dateline Episode “Deadly Intersection”

Dateline NBC revisited the case in the episode “Deadly Intersection,” which aired on November 6, 2026. Lester Holt spoke with Jacquelyn’s best friend, Michelle Kenney, and Kenney’s sister, Sarah Rucker, as well as lead detective Mike Moran, detective Jill Beauregard, case supervisor Sgt. Daniel Santos, lead prosecutor Patrick Seidel, trial prosecutor Shaundria Hanna, defense attorney Brandon Mead, and WBAL-TV 11 reporter David Collins. The episode traced the three-month hunt for Jacquelyn’s killers, which led police from one dead end to another until the arrests in Texas revealed the truth.

Why the Case Still Matters

Jacquelyn Smith worked as a civilian contractor with the Joint Program Executive Office for Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Defense in Maryland, which manages the nation’s supply of defense equipment. The false story of her death tapped into long-standing fears about Baltimore’s violence and homelessness, and it briefly shaped how people talked about giving money to panhandlers. The case showed how a carefully built lie can spread quickly—and how surveillance video, cellphone data, and one person’s decision to testify can pull it apart.
