Netizens are outraged after Netflix’s new trailer for HYBE’s girl group KATSEYE was perceived as disrespectful to BTS.

Controversial Clip Sparks Anger

On August 5, Netflix released a trailer for the series Watch Pop Star Academy: KATSEYE, which documents the creation of KATSEYE, a global girl group formed in collaboration with HYBE and Geffen.

However, one part of the trailer has ignited backlash. During the trailer, a staff member commented on BTS and HYBE:

“The people that created BTS have this vision to take the K out of K-Pop and make it global.”

When this clip was posted, netizens were quick to express their discontent.

ARMYs React Strongly

Many fans, particularly ARMYs (BTS’s fanbase), took offense to the statement. They argued that HYBE didn’t “create” BTS; instead, the members of BTS built the group themselves through their hard work and dedication. Fans also pointed out that the comment about taking the “K” out of K-Pop and making it global seemed to undermine BTS’s significant contribution to the genre’s worldwide popularity.

This isn’t the first time HYBE has faced backlash over similar comments. Bang Si Hyuk, the founder of HYBE, previously expressed a desire to remove the “K” from K-Pop to make it more global, which also met with intense criticism from fans and the general public.
