John Krasinski has shared exciting news about possibly returning as Jim Halpert in The Office spin-off The Paper. The actor confirmed he is open to a cameo if asked by creator Greg Daniels. The new mockumentary series will premiere on Peacock in September 2025.
Krasinski spoke about his willingness to reprise his role during the premiere of his new movie Fountain of Youth. He said he hasn’t been approached yet but would happily join if Daniels called him.
“I’d do anything for that guy. He calls, I’ll show up.”
The Paper follows employees at a struggling Ohio newspaper called The Truth Teller. The same documentary crew from The Office will film the new series. While most original cast members won’t return, Oscar Nuñez will reprise his role as Oscar Martinez.
Steve Carell, who played Michael Scott, confirmed he won’t appear in the spin-off. He praised the show’s concept but said his character wouldn’t fit the new story. Krasinski agrees the spin-off has a fresh and exciting approach.
Domhnall Gleeson stars as the publisher trying to save the dying newspaper. He plays the lead role, similar to Carell’s Michael Scott in the original series. Gleeson reached out to Carell before accepting the part, showing his respect for the original show.
“He actually called me and asked, ‘Should I do this? Did you enjoy it?’ I said of course.”
The Paper features a mostly new cast, including Sabrina Impacciatore, Melvin Gregg, and Chelsea Frei. The series explores challenges faced by local newspapers in the digital age. The internet’s impact on journalism is a key theme.
Greg Daniels, the creator of The Office, described the spin-off as a new story in the same universe. He compared it to The Mandalorian in the Star Wars franchise. The show isn’t a reboot but a fresh take with a different workplace setting.
“It’s about this struggling Midwestern newspaper that’s much reduced from its glory days. The villain here is the internet and the ability to look at everybody’s news for free.”
Krasinski has been supportive of Gleeson taking on a lead role in the spin-off. The two worked together on Fountain of Youth, and Krasinski encouraged Gleeson to join the project. He believes Daniels will deliver another great show.
“Greg is the heart and soul of that show. We all follow Greg anywhere, and still would.”
Fans of The Office can expect a mix of nostalgia and new humor in The Paper. While Jim Halpert’s return isn’t confirmed yet, Krasinski’s openness keeps hopes alive. The series will stream on Peacock, where the original show is also available.
