The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced this year’s Governors Awards honorees. Tom Cruise, Dolly Parton, Debbie Allen, and Wynn Thomas will receive honorary Oscars at the ceremony on November 16, 2025. The event will take place at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Hollywood.

Cruise, Allen, and Thomas will get Honorary Awards for their lifetime contributions to film. Parton will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for her charity work. All four will be given Oscar statuettes.

Academy President Janet Yang said:

“This yearโ€™s Governors Awards will celebrate four legendary individuals whose extraordinary careers and commitment to our filmmaking community continue to leave a lasting impact. The Academyโ€™s Board of Governors is honored to recognize these brilliant artists.”

Why Tom Cruise Is Getting an Honorary Oscar

Tom Cruise is one of Hollywoodโ€™s biggest stars. He has been acting for over 40 years and is known for doing his own dangerous stunts. His films have earned billions worldwide.

Cruise has been nominated for four Oscars but never won. He got nods for Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire, and Magnolia as an actor. He also produced Top Gun: Maverick, which was up for Best Picture in 2023.

The Academy praised Cruise for supporting movie theaters, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Top Gun: Maverick helped bring audiences back to cinemas in 2022. His Mission: Impossible films are also famous for their action scenes.

Dolly Partonโ€™s Humanitarian Work Earns Her an Oscar

Dolly Parton is a country music legend with two past Oscar nominations for Best Original Song. She wrote “9 to 5” (1980) and “Travelinโ€™ Thru” (2005). Now, she will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

Parton is being honored for her charity efforts. She started the Dollywood Foundation in 1988 to help kids in her home state of Tennessee. Her Imagination Library has given away over 285 million free books to children since 1995.

She also donated $2 million for hurricane relief in 2024. The Academy said she “exemplifies the spirit” of the humanitarian award.

Debbie Allenโ€™s Decades of Work in Film and TV

Debbie Allen has worked in entertainment for nearly 50 years. She is an actress, choreographer, and producer. She starred in Fame and Ragtime and choreographed the Oscars show seven times.

Allen also produced films like Amistad and TV shows like Greyโ€™s Anatomy. The Academy called her a “trailblazer” whose work crosses many genres.

Wynn Thomas: A Visionary Production Designer

Wynn Thomas is a respected production designer. He worked on many films with director Spike Lee, including Do the Right Thing, Malcolm X, and Da 5 Bloods.

His other credits include A Beautiful Mind and Hidden Figures. The Academy praised his “visionary eye” and skill in bringing stories to life.

What Are the Governors Awards?

The Governors Awards are held every year to honor people who have made a big impact on movies. Unlike the main Oscars, this event is not televised. Winners are usually recognized at the next Academy Awards in March 2026.

Last yearโ€™s honorees included Quincy Jones and James Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson.
