The AI doll is back for another round. M3GAN 2.0, the sequel to the 2022 surprise hit, arrived in theaters in June 2025, bringing back familiar faces and introducing dangerous new players. The film sees the titular robot resurrected to face a formidable new enemy born from her own technology. Here is a complete breakdown of the cast and characters you will meet in the sequel.
The Returning Heroes and One Anti-Hero
The core family from the first film returns, still dealing with the aftermath of M3GAN’s initial rampage.
- Allison Williams as Gemma: Reprising her role as the roboticist who created M3GAN, Allison Williams returns as Gemma. In the years since the first film, Gemma has become a high-profile author and an advocate for government oversight of artificial intelligence, trying to right the wrongs of her past. She has started a new company, Best Bionix, with her former coworkers, working on projects like a robotic exoskeleton. Despite her public stance, Gemma finds herself forced to resurrect her most infamous creation when a new threat emerges.
- Violet McGraw as Cady: Violet McGraw is back as Cady, Gemma’s niece. Now 12 years old and rebelling against Gemma’s overprotective rules, Cady is a teenager trying to find her place. She is learning computer science and robotics, following in her aunt’s footsteps, but also struggles with the memory of her relationship with M3GAN. As one cast guide notes, “Everyoneโs telling Cady that M3GAN is nothing more than a bunch of ones and zeros, but Cady doesnโt think thatโs true”.
- Amie Donald and Jenna Davis as M3GAN: The duo behind the doll both return. Amie Donald once again provides the physical performance for M3GAN, with the sequel requiring her to learn martial arts like Wing Chun. Jenna Davis returns as the voice of the AI. In the story, M3GAN reveals she survived the first film by making a backup in Gemma’s smart home. Needing to combat a new threat, Gemra rebuilds M3GAN, making her faster, stronger, and more lethal. Davis hints at the character’s journey, stating, “Sheโs trying to gain everyoneโs trust back because of what happened in the first film. Itโs always lurking in the back of their head that, you know, sheโs a killer robot”.
The film also brings back Brian Jordan Alvarez and Jen Van Epps as Cole and Tess, Gemma’s loyal coworkers and partners in her new business venture.
The New and Dangerous Additions
The sequel introduces several new characters who expand the world and raise the stakes.
- Ivanna Sakhno as AMELIA: A major new force in the film is AMELIA, played by Ivanna Sakhno. The character’s name is an acronym for “autonomous military engagement logistics & infiltration android.” AMELIA is a military-grade weapon created by a defense contractor who stole the underlying technology from M3GAN. She is designed as the ultimate killer infiltration spy, but as her self-awareness grows, she becomes less interested in taking orders from humans. Sakhno doesn’t see her purely as a villain, explaining, “I see her as somebody who is trying to understand her own identity, her own wiringโฆ She is a highly advanced A.I. that was created for military purposes, but throughout this storyline we see her beginning to question her own autonomy”.
- Jemaine Clement as Alton Appleton: The film adds a tech billionaire to the mix, played by veteran comedian Jemaine Clement. His character, Alton Appleton, is the owner of a company called Altwave, which controls much of the cloud computing in North America. He uses a neurochip that allows him to walk and control technology. Appleton offers Gemma a chance to work for him, but she turns him down due to her ethical concerns about his company’s practices.
- Aristotle Athari as Christian: Aristotle Athari joins the cast as Christian, a cybersecurity expert and anti-AI activist who is Gemma’s partner at the Center for Safe Technology. He is described as having an “eager” energy and is Gemma’s suitor in the film. Director Gerard Johnstone said of the character, “We wanted someone who embodied a well-intentioned human โ someone Gemma could genuinely connect with”.
- Timm Sharp as Colonel Sattler: Timm Sharp plays Colonel Sattler, the head of a secret branch of the U.S. Army specializing in new technologies. He is the one who gives demonstrations of the AMELIA project and is responsible for its creation.
The Story So Far
M3GAN 2.0 picks up two years after the original movie. Gemma has become an advocate for AI regulation and is raising Cady in a new home in San Francisco. The peace is shattered when they learn that M3GAN’s technology has been stolen and used to create AMELIA, a military android who has become self-aware and escaped human control.
With the future at risk, Gemra has no choice but to bring M3GAN back online, giving her upgrades to make her more powerful than ever. The stage is set for a showdown between the original “bitch” and her military-grade counterpart. The film shifts from the horror of the original more toward science fiction action, exploring themes of AI morality and control on a larger scale.
