What Happened in Episode 4

The fourth episode, “The Great Swirling Apparatus of Our Planet’s Function,” provided major revelations about Pennywise’s origins. Using his psychic abilities, Dick Hallorann entered the mind of Taniel, a member of the Indigenous group that has long protected the secrets of the creature.

Through Taniel’s memories, viewers learned the being known as The Galloo arrived on Earth via a meteorite. Indigenous people forged a blade from this meteorite to fight it and used thirteen shards to trap Pennywise within Derry’s borders. White settlers who ignored the warnings ultimately strengthened the creature.

The episode ended with a crucial vision. Taniel showed Hallorann the path to Pennywise’s lair, focusing on the Well House on Neibolt Street. This is the same location familiar to fans from the 2017 and 2019 films, which leads directly to the creature’s sewer lair. This revelation means the US military now knows how to find Pennywise.

Meanwhile, the kids’ plan to take photos of ghosts to clear Hank Grogan’s name failed. In a terrifying sequence, Pennywise preyed on Marge’s fear of snails, leading to a gruesome incident where her eyes stretched out on stalks. She nearly used a chainsaw on herself before Lilly intervened, though others mistakenly believed Lilly was the attacker.

What to Expect in Episode 5 “Neibolt Street”

The title of the fifth episode points directly to its central location. The official logline for the episode states:

โ€œAfter learning the truth about General Shawโ€™s operation, Leroy decides to move his family to the base for safety. While the tribal Keepers strategize how to contain increased aggression in town, the military descends on Neibolt Street, and the kids head into the sewers with their own objective.โ€

This sets the stage for a multi-pronged story. The military, led by General Francis Shaw, will launch its operation into the Well House, likely leading to devastating consequences. At the same time, the group of kidsโ€”Lilly, Will, Ronnie, and Richโ€”will embark on their own dangerous mission within the sewer system, searching for their own answers about the evil haunting their town.

Actor Blake Cameron James, who plays Will Hanlon, hinted at the physical demands of filming, describing one water-based scene as “the most physically taxing scene I think Iโ€™ve ever done.”
