The first full trailer for Y: Marshals, the new Yellowstone spinoff focusing on Kayce Dutton, has been released. The footage shows Kayce struggling to build a new life as a U.S. Marshal after leaving the Yellowstone Ranch behind, but one major character from his past is conspicuously absent, raising questions about her fate.

A New Beginning for Kayce Dutton

Luke Grimes returns as Kayce Dutton in the extended trailer for the upcoming CBS series. The footage opens with Kayce reflecting on his painful past. He states, โ€œI fought every day to get out from under the weight of the Yellowstoneโ€. He recounts the losses he has suffered, saying, โ€œIโ€™ve lost my teammates, my parents, and my brothersโ€. Now, he is trying to find a new beginning.

This new path leads him to an elite unit of the U.S. Marshals in Montana. According to the show’s official description, Kayce uses his unique skills as a cowboy and a Navy SEAL to bring justice to the region. He has sold his family’s ranch and is attempting to move on from the events that concluded the original Yellowstone series.

The Mystery of Monica Dutton’s Absence

A central question emerging from the trailer is the whereabouts of Kayce’s wife, Monica Dutton, played by Kelsey Asbille in Yellowstone. She is completely absent from the trailer and is not listed among the cast members reprising their roles.

This has led to widespread speculation about the character’s fate. Kayce is seen wearing his wedding ring in some shots, but he is also shown mourning at a gravesite. The trailer does not confirm whose grave it is, leaving audiences to wonder if Monica has been killed off or if the couple has separated. Her absence introduces a significant mystery as the series begins.

Who Is Returning and Who Is New?

The spinoff brings back several familiar faces from Yellowstone alongside new characters.

Brecken Merrill returns as Tate Dutton, Kayce’s son, who is now grown and appears to be working alongside his father. Gil Birmingham is back as Thomas Rainwater, and Mo Brings Plenty reprises his role as Mo, both serving as confidantes to Kayce.

The series also introduces a new team of Marshals. The cast includes Logan Marshall-Green as Pete Calvin, a friend from Kayce’s military past, Arielle Kebbel as Belle Skinner, Ash Santos as Andrea Cruz, and Tatanka Means as Miles Kittle. Brett Cullen will also appear in a recurring role as Harry Gifford, the head of the U.S. Marshals in Montana.

The Storyline and Premiere Date

The official logline for the series explains that Kayce and his new team must balance the high psychological cost of being the last line of defense in Montana’s war on violence with their duties to their families. For Kayce, this means navigating his relationship with his son Tate and his allies from the Broken Rock reservation.

Y: Marshals is set to premiere on Sunday, March 1, 2026, at 8 p.m. ET on CBS. The series will be available for streaming on Paramount+.
