Netflix has confirmed a major new action project that brings together a powerful cast. The film TYGO will feature Ma Dong-seok, global superstar BLACKPINK’s Lisa, and actor Lee Jin-wook. The movie is set within the same story world as the popular Extraction action series. This marks Lisa’s first movie role in a Korean production and her first time doing action on screen. The official announcement was made on December 5, 2025, confirming production has begun.

The Story of ‘TYGO’

TYGO is an action film that follows a character named Tygo, a mercenary who grew up as a child soldier in war-torn regions. His life is driven by survival until a mission changes everything. During a high-stakes operation, his close friend and teammate Lia is kidnapped by a dangerous criminal organization. Lia is not just a teammate; she is like family to Tygo, as they share a past of surviving difficult childhoods together. Her capture forces Tygo to launch a dangerous, life-risking rescue mission to save her.

This new film is officially a spin-off of Netflix’s Extraction universe, which includes the hit films starring Chris Hemsworth. Instead of continuing the main story, TYGO will introduce a completely new set of characters and a storyline with a distinct Korean perspective. Producer Angela Russo-Otstot from AGBO, one of the production companies behind the film, explained the vision, stating: “Weโ€™re thrilled to explore the world of โ€˜Extractionโ€™ through a South Korean lens”.

Meet the Star-Studded Cast

The film brings together three major stars from different entertainment fields, each taking on key roles.

Ma Dong-seok, also known internationally as Don Lee, will play the lead character, Tygo. He is one of Korea’s most famous action stars, known for the The Outlaws film series and his role in the Marvel movie Eternals. He is also a producer for this project. Ma Dong-seok shared his thoughts on the film, saying: “‘TYGO’ brings a distinctly Korean identity into the global โ€˜Extractionโ€™ universe. We canโ€™t wait to unleash its explosive energy on audiences worldwide.”.

Lee Jin-wook joins the cast as the main opponent, Arman Choi. Arman Choi is a key figure within the criminal organization that stands against Tygo. Lee Jin-wook is widely recognized for his roles in global Netflix hits like Squid Game and Sweet Home. He expressed his honor at being part of the project, commenting: “As a fan of the โ€˜Extractionโ€™ franchise, itโ€™s a great honor for me to join this universe.”.

The casting that has generated significant excitement is BLACKPINK’s Lisa as Lia, Tygo’s kidnapped friend. This role marks several firsts for Lisa: it is her Korean film debut and her first major action role. She recently appeared in the third season of HBO’s The White Lotus, which was filmed in her home country of Thailand. Lisa talked about fulfilling a personal goal: “Being in an action film has always been a dream of mine, and for my first movie role to be in such an exciting action film is a dream come true.”.

The Production Team Behind the Film

TYGO is backed by a strong production team with proven experience in action filmmaking. The director is Lee Sang-yong, who is known for directing the successful Korean action films The Roundup 2 and The Roundup 3. He is also working on the upcoming The Roundup 5. Joining him is acclaimed action director Heo Myeong-haeng, ensuring the film’s fight scenes and stunts will be of high quality.

The film is a collaboration between several production companies. It is produced by Big Punch Pictures, which is led by Ma Dong-seok himself, and AGBO, the American studio founded by the Russo brothers that produced the original Extraction films. Other co-producers include Nova Film and B&C Content, who previously worked on the Netflix film Badland Hunters.

What This Means for the ‘Extraction’ Universe

The Extraction film series, starring Chris Hemsworth, became a major success for Netflix. The first film, released in 2020, was watched by 90 million households in its first month. A sequel followed in 2023. While plans for a third main Extraction film continue, TYGO represents a strategic expansion of the franchise.

Instead of being labeled Extraction 3, TYGO is a standalone spin-off. It will exist in the same broader universe but focus on entirely new characters and a Korean-led storyline. This approach allows Netflix to build a larger world of stories similar to how comic book movies create shared universes. The film’s plot is based on an original story written by Ma Dong-seok, with the screenplay written by Cha Woo Jin.

Fans of high-octane action and the star-studded cast will be able to watch TYGO exclusively on Netflix. A specific release date has not yet been announced.
