Minnie Driver describes filming the Netflix thriller Run Away as an experience she never wants to repeat, despite her deep connection to its powerful story about family and addiction. The actress, playing paediatrician Ingrid Greene, shared that the show’s intense emotional themes and a demanding physical sequence made production particularly challenging. The series, the newest adaptation from author Harlan Coben, launched on Netflix on January 1, 2026.
The Physical and Emotional Toll of a Netflix Thriller
While Driver believes in the show’s important message, she was candid about the harsh realities of bringing such a dark story to life. A significant source of the difficulty was a major plot point in the first episode where her character, Ingrid, is shot. This violent event leaves her hospitalized and in a coma, setting off a chain of desperate actions by her husband, Simon, played by James Nesbitt.
The scene required precise choreography and placed Driver at the center of the episode’s most chaotic moment. Although Driver did not detail the specific stunts, her clear statement about not wanting to relive the experience points to a physically and emotionally draining filming process. This intensity is a hallmark of Coben’s stories, which he admits must present a family in crisis to be compelling.
Confronting the “Insidiousness” of Addiction
Beyond the physical demands, Driver connected with the story on a profound personal level. She prepared for the role of a mother grappling with her daughter’s addiction by drawing from real-life observations.
“The insidiousness of addiction is that it doesn’t matter what kind of a home you come from,” Driver explained. “Paige’s family have offered the most they could, yet still this beautiful kid is lost down the tunnel of this disease.”
Driver spoke about attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings with friends to understand their struggles and cited past relationships with people who suffered from addiction. This research informed her portrayal of Ingrid, a doctor and mother who feels powerless to save her own child. Driver noted that the show tackles subjects often hidden from view, especially in an age focused on presenting perfect lives on social media.
A Surprising Journey with AI De-Aging Technology
A unique technical aspect of the production involved Driver and co-star James Nesbitt being “de-aged” for a flashback scene. The scene shows a younger Simon and Ingrid on their first date. Neither actor knew during filming that advanced visual effects would be used in post-production to make them appear decades younger.
Nesbitt recalled watching the scene and thinking, “God, I look quite good there,” before realizing the special effects team had digitally altered their appearances. Driver, who generally avoids watching her own work, made an exception to see the AI’s effect.
“I watched it because I wanted to see what the AI would look like. It was quite shocking, but it really just looked like I did when I was younger, and that made me happy,” Driver said. “It reminded me of when I started out… I was like, ‘She does a great job.’ I hope she’d be proud of where I wound up.”
The de-aging was handled by Space VFX, marking the first time both actors had undergone the process. Driver reflected that her younger self’s focus on vanity has shifted, and she now prioritizes the experience of making art over judging her appearance on screen.
