FX has confirmed that the critically praised series The Lowdown, starring Ethan Hawke, will officially return for a second season. The network announced the renewal in January 2026, just over two months after the show’s successful first season concluded. Production for the new season is scheduled to begin this spring in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the series’ primary setting.

Why The Lowdown Is Returning For Season 2

The decision to renew The Lowdown follows an exceptional debut season that earned widespread critical acclaim. The show was recognized as one of the Top 10 TV Programs of 2025 by the American Film Institute (AFI) Awards. It also appeared on numerous year-end “best of” lists from major publications.

Beyond the awards, the series proved to be a hit with audiences. It holds an impressive 98% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics praised the show for its unique blend of hard-boiled detective mystery, humor, and its deep, affectionate portrayal of Tulsa and its community.

What The Lowdown Season 1 Was About

Created by Sterlin Harjo, the mind behind the celebrated series Reservation Dogs, The Lowdown follows Lee Raybon, a Tulsa bookstore owner and self-proclaimed “truthstorian”. Raybon’s latest exposรฉ into the powerful local Washberg family takes a dark turn when its publication is followed by the suspicious suicide of family member Dale Washberg.

Convinced there is more to the story, Lee follows a trail of clues left by Dale, pulling him deeper into a conspiracy involving land, money, and white supremacist groups. The story balances Lee’s dangerous investigation with his personal struggles, particularly his desire to be a better father to his teenage daughter, Francis.

The first season featured an all-star ensemble. Alongside Ethan Hawke, the cast included Keith David as private investigator Marty Brunner. The season boasted a remarkable lineup of guest stars, including Kyle MacLachlan, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Tim Blake Nelson, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, and Michael “Killer Mike” Render. Notable appearances also came from Peter Dinklage and the late Graham Greene.

What We Know About The Lowdown Season 2 So Far

Specific plot details for the new season are being kept under wraps, but some key information has been confirmed. Ethan Hawke will return to lead the series as the relentless Lee Raybon. While the full cast list is not official, it is expected that core family members like Ryan Kiera Armstrong, who plays Lee’s daughter Francis, and Kaniehtiio Horn, who plays his ex-wife Samantha, are likely to return.

Series creator Sterlin Harjo has expressed his long-term vision for the show. He indicated that he sees the potential for multiple seasons, with each acting as its own distinct chapter in Lee Raybon’s life. In an earlier interview, Harjo shared his hope to further explore Oklahoma and the relationships Lee built in the first season.

Sterlin Harjo told The Hollywood Reporter, “I’ve thought about many seasons of this show. I’ve thought about other projects โ€” there was always an idea of going deeper into Oklahoma and some of these relationships that Lee has made in the first season”.

Ethan Hawke has also spoken about the show’s structure, noting the aim was to create a satisfying, propulsive story that leaves viewers eager for more.

Fans of Harjo’s previous work might also be in for a treat. The creator has playfully teased that he plans to feature all the main stars from Reservation Dogs in The Lowdown at some point. Season 1 already included cameos from Devery Jacobs and Paulina Alexis.
