Sarah Michelle Gellar, the actress who brought the iconic vampire slayer to life, has officially named the long-awaited return to the Hellmouth. The new Hulu series will be called Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale. More importantly, Gellar wants fans to know the project is not a simple reboot. In a recent interview, she described it as a “continuation” of the original story, aiming to explore the world with and without Buffy Summers many years later.
The title gives away a major clue about the setting. Sunnydale, the California town famously swallowed by a crater in the original series finale, has apparently been rebuilt. The story is set to pick up 25 years after those events. Gellar will reprise her role in a recurring capacity, appearing alongside a new cast led by actress Ryan Kiera Armstrong, who plays a young Slayer named Nova.
What Makes New Sunnydale A “Continuation” Instead Of A Reboot
Sarah Michelle Gellar was very specific about the language used to describe the new show. She explained the core idea during an appearance on the Shut Up Evan podcast.
“It’s not a sequel, it’s not a reboot. It’s a continuation,” Gellar said. “I think so, because where she is now in this world and what this world is that Buffy lives in — with her, without her — that kind of exploration… It’s not picking up with all the same characters right away. That’s why the name was even important to me… It’s Buffy, but it’s also something else.”
This means the show will likely focus on a new generation of characters in the rebuilt town, with Gellar’s Buffy serving as a guiding figure in their lives. The original series ran from 1997 to 2003 and left a lasting impact on television, inspiring many shows that followed. Gellar emphasized that the goal of New Sunnydale is not to replace or outdo the original but to honor its spirit.
“I never saw how and why it could be as good [as the original series]. I’m not trying to be better. I just want to hold and honor the memory of what we created,” she stated.
The Team Behind The Scenes And In Front Of The Camera
Bringing Buffy back required a compelling vision. That came from Chloé Zhao, the Oscar-winning director known for films like Eternals and Nomadland. Zhao is directing the pilot episode and is a key executive producer. Her passion and clear vision for the world are what ultimately convinced Gellar, who had been publicly against a revival for years, to return.
“Chloé Zhao came to me and not just her passion, because I’ve seen people with passion before, but she knew how to go into the world. She knew what the world was, and she knew the way,” Gellar shared. This collaboration has been in development for about three years.
The writing team consists of Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, who penned the pilot script and will act as showrunners. The original series’ creator, Joss Whedon, is not involved in this project.
The cast blends the familiar with the new. Alongside Gellar and Ryan Kiera Armstrong as Nova, the main cast includes Faly Rakotohavana, Ava Jean, Sarah Bock, Daniel Di Tomasso, and Jack Cutmore-Scott. They will play students and adults in the new Sunnydale community. Guest stars include Chase Sui Wonders as a vampire named Shirley and Merrin Dungey as a school counselor.
Why The New Series Is Taking Its Time To Get Right
Fans have been eager for news since the pilot was filmed in August 2025, but updates have been slow. Gellar directly addressed the lengthy development process, stressing that the team will not rush the project.
“We’re still working on that why and how,” Gellar admitted. “I know we live in a society where we want binging, we want it now. I know this seems like it’s taking a long time, and that’s because unless we’re sure it’s exactly what we set out to do and that it makes sense to do it, we don’t want to sully the legacy. When I know it’s perfect, then it will be out there. But I won’t do it unless I know it can be that.”
It is important to note that Hulu has only ordered a pilot episode so far. The streaming service has not yet given a full series order, which is a standard step in television production. The team is ensuring the pilot is exactly right before moving forward.

The announcement of the title and Gellar’s clarifying comments have sparked conversation among longtime fans. On social media, reactions are mixed but hopeful.
