The wait for one of Netflix’s most ambitious Taiwanese fantasy series is finally over. Agent from Above will premiere globally on the streaming platform on April 2, 2026 .

This action-fantasy series blends Taoist mythology with modern urban life. It is based on the first book of the popular Taiwanese novel series “The Oracle Comes” by author Teensy. The project has been in development for several years and faced multiple delays, making its upcoming release a major event for fans of Asian fantasy dramas.

What is the Story of Agent from Above?

The series follows Han Chieh, a former drug addict played by Kai Ko. He possesses the rare ability to act as a spirit medium. His life changes when he is recruited by a powerful deity, the Third Crown Prince (Wang Po-chieh), to serve as his agent on Earth.

Han Chieh’s mission is to resolve supernatural disturbances and battle demons and wandering spirits that threaten the human world. His work is not just a jobโ€”it is a path to redemption for mistakes he made in his past. He hopes to earn better conditions for his parents, who are enduring punishment in the underworld.

He is joined in his fight by Yeh Tzu (Buffy Chen), an optimistic college student, and Chang Min (Johnny Yang), a detective who can also see spirits. Together, they face a terrifying villain named Chen Chi-sha (Chen Yi-wen). Their journey forces Han Chieh to confront his past and discover the true meaning of his gift.

Main Cast and Characters

The series brings together a talented cast of Taiwanese actors. Kai Ko leads the cast as Han Chieh, a spirit medium and former addict seeking redemption who is bound to serve the Third Crown Prince. Wang Po-chieh portrays the Third Crown Prince, a powerful deity from Taoist mythology who recruits Han Chieh as his earthly agent.

Buffy Chen plays Yeh Tzu, an optimistic college student who joins Han Chieh on his journey. Johnny Yang takes on the role of Chang Min, a detective with the ability to see spirits. Hsueh Shih-ling appears as Wu Tien-chi, a powerful being who threatens the balance between the human and demon realms. Chen Yi-wen rounds out the main cast as Chen Chi-sha, the mysterious and ruthless villain of the series.

Production History and Delays

The road to the screen has been long for this series. Production originally began in 2019, with an initial target release date in 2023. However, the project faced several major hurdles.

Filming was first delayed by the global COVID-19 pandemic. Then, in late 2022, a serious accident occurred on set. Lead actor Kai Ko was hit by a filming drone during an action sequence and suffered severe facial injuries. Production was halted for months while he underwent surgery and recovered.

With a reported budget of over NT$180 million, it is one of the most expensive dramas ever produced in Taiwan. This investment required a lengthy post-production period to complete the extensive visual effects. Filming finally wrapped in March 2023, and after nearly three years of post-production, the series is ready for its April 2026 debut.

Directors and Creative Team

The series is co-directed by Kuan Wei-chieh and Lai Chun-yu. It is produced by Singapore’s mm2 Entertainment and Taiwan’s Good Films Production, with Rita Chuang serving as lead producer.

Director Lai shared that he cast Kai Ko because of his “rare authenticity,” a mix of youthful defiance and vulnerability that was perfect for the role of Han Chieh. Director Kuan described the series as a blend of “Taiwan’s temple culture with the contemporary world,” promising a universe that is both recognizable and completely reimagined with extensive VFX and dynamic fight choreography.

A Unique Fantasy World

One of the most distinctive elements of the series is its use of Taiwanese folk culture. The first-look poster features blazing traditional milk caps (puaฬh-รญng-รก), a nostalgic staple of Taiwanese childhood games. In the series, these are reimagined as enchanted weapons wielded by Han Chieh. They serve as conduits of divine power to battle evil spirits.

The series draws heavily from Taoist mythology and traditional beliefs, creating a rich, layered world where gods, monsters, and humans coexist.

Episode Count and Streaming Details

The first season of Agent from Above will consist of six episodes. This focused structure aims to deliver a cinematic, high-impact narrative without unnecessary filler.

All six episodes will be available to stream globally on Netflix starting April 2, 2026.
