Bobby Cannavale is getting honest about what went down while filming intimate scenes with screen legend Jamie Lee Curtis for their new Prime Video crime thriller, Scarpetta. The actor, known for his roles in Boardwalk Empire and The Watcher, revealed that what could have been an awkward work situation turned into a surprisingly fun experience, all thanks to his co-star’s positive energy.
The series, which started streaming on March 11, 2026, brings Patricia Cornwell’s famous book character Dr. Kay Scarpetta to the screen for the first time. With Nicole Kidman playing the lead role, Curtis as her sister Dorothy, and Cannavale as detective Pete Marino, the show has quickly become one of the most talked-about new dramas on the platform. But it’s the on-screen relationship between Cannavale and Curtis that has people talking, and the actor is setting the record straight about what it was like to shoot those steamy scenes.
Jamie Lee Curtis Made Filming Intimate Scenes Feel Natural and Fun
In a recent interview, Cannavale, 55, opened up about the chemistry between his character Pete Marino and Curtis’s character Dorothy Scarpetta. He described the pair as having a “really active, physical sex life” in the show, which meant the actors had to get comfortable with each other quickly.
Cannavale admitted that shooting sex scenes is typically not an easy part of the job. He explained that the process is “very awkward usually” because of the technical nature of filming. “There’s all these people around,” he said, referring to the camera operators, lighting technicians, and directors who are all in the room watching the actors work.
But working with Curtis, 67, changed the entire dynamic.
“Jamie is so in the room when she’s in the room. She’s in the room when she’s not in the room, you know what I mean?” Cannavale shared.
He praised his co-star for creating an atmosphere where everyone felt comfortable. According to Cannavale, Curtis has a special gift for making the entire cast and crew feel like they are part of something meaningful.
“Jamie Lee makes everybody in the room feel like an artist, like we’re all making this thing,” he said. “She is just such a life force, and the enthusiasm and the positive nature that she brings to everything is infectious.”
Because of Curtis’s approach, what could have been tense and awkward moments on set turned into something enjoyable. Cannavale summed up the experience by saying, “That was just really fun to shoot.”
How Jamie Lee Curtis Personally Brought Cannavale onto the Show
Interestingly, Cannavale didn’t get the job through the usual channels of agents and auditions. It was Curtis herself who reached out to him personally to get him involved in the project.
“She texted me and she talked about the books to me and she made it sound really enticing,” Cannavale recalled.
After that initial conversation, he read the script and was immediately drawn into the world of Scarpetta. He praised the writing, especially the way the story moves between two different time periods. The show follows Kidman’s character, Dr. Kay Scarpetta, as she returns to her hometown to investigate a murder that looks similar to a case she worked on 28 years earlier.
“I thought the combination of those really rich, well-drawn characters with the conceit of putting them into two timeframes like that, I thought was really, really clever,” Cannavale said.
The Truck Scenes with Nicole Kidman Were Equally Intense
While the sex scenes with Curtis got a lot of attention, Cannavale also had plenty to say about working with Nicole Kidman. The two actors share many scenes together, mostly inside the tight space of a pickup truck. These moments, he explained, are where some of the show’s most important drama happens.
“Most of the time Nicole and I had scenes together, they were in that truck,” Cannavale said. “I knew that those scenes would be really rich because in some ways, those are the best-written scenes.”
He described the truck as a place of secrets, a private space where characters can drop their guard and reveal their true selves.
“It’s like a code of silence, that truck. That’s where these deep, dark secrets start to reveal themselves,” he explained. “They dance around it and they attack it head on in some cases, but it’s always charged when we’re in the truck. There was so much good stuff for me to play with.”
A Family Affair: Bobby Cannavale’s Real-Life Son Joins the Cast
One of the unique aspects of Scarpetta is its casting choice for the flashback sequences. The show uses younger actors to play the main characters in scenes set 28 years in the past. For the role of the young Pete Marino, the producers cast Jake CannavaleโBobby Cannavale’s real-life son.
Jake, 30, whom Bobby shares with his ex-wife Jenny Lumet, plays the younger version of his father’s character. This created a special dynamic on set that Bobby deeply appreciated.
“I’m really grateful for the opportunity to get to spend this much time with him,” the proud father said.
He explained that Jake has worked hard to build his acting career over the years. “Jake has earned his way up here to this level now. He’s just been putting that work together over the years, and of course I’m proud of him.”
Bobby also took on a mentoring role, sharing advice with his son about how to approach playing a character in a long-form series. Unlike a movie or a play, a TV series requires actors to pace themselves and reveal details about their character slowly over time.
“You want to tease it out. You don’t want to show everything early. I think that’s what keeps it interesting. It’s not like a play where we have a beginning, a middle and an end, or even a movie. It’s like a slow burn,” Bobby explained. “So we would talk a lot about that. I like having those conversations with him.”
What Is “Scarpetta” About?
For those who haven’t started watching yet, Scarpetta is based on the best-selling book series by Patricia Cornwell, which has sold over 120 million copies worldwide since the first novel came out in 1990. This is the first time the character has been brought to the screen in a television series.
Nicole Kidman stars as Dr. Kay Scarpetta, a brilliant forensic pathologist with a sharp eye for detail. When a brutal murder pulls her back to her hometown, she realizes the crime is connected to a case from her past. The show follows her as she tries to catch the killer while also dealing with her complicated family, especially her troubled sister Dorothy, played by Curtis.
The cast also includes Simon Baker as FBI profiler Benton Wesley and Ariana DeBose as Lucy, Kay’s tech-savvy niece. The show was developed for television by Liz Sarnoff, who worked on shows like Deadwood and Lost.
