After eight seasons of laughs, the beloved CBS sitcom is preparing to say its final goodbye. The Neighborhood series finale is officially scheduled for May 18, 2026, bringing the story of the Butlers and Johnsons to a close. The show, which premiered in 2018, has been a steady ratings performer for the network, and fans now have a date to mark on their calendars for the final episode.

The cast recently finished filming the last episode, with Beth Behrs sharing an emotional social media post about wrapping up her time as Gemma Johnson. The actress reflected on the eight-year journey that saw her character grow through marriage, a global pandemic, and motherhood. The final season returned from its winter break on February 23, 2026, and will continue airing new episodes every Monday night until the May finale.

Final Season Return and Broadcast Schedule

The eighth season of The Neighborhood resumed on CBS on February 23, 2026, following the show’s winter hiatus. New episodes air every Monday at 8:00 PM Eastern Time on CBS. For viewers who prefer streaming, episodes become available on Paramount+ the day after they air on broadcast television.

The show took its holiday break after the fall finale titled “Welcome to Secrets and Santa,” which aired on December 8, 2025. That episode featured the return of Holly Robinson Peete as Calvin’s former girlfriend, creating some unexpected tension during the Butlers’ anniversary celebration. The series will now run uninterrupted through the spring, building toward the series finale in May.

Cast and Characters in the Final Episodes

The core cast has remained intact for the final season, with all main players returning to close out their characters’ stories. Cedric the Entertainer leads the ensemble as Calvin Butler, alongside Max Greenfield as Dave Johnson. Tichina Arnold returns as Tina Butler, with Beth Behrs as Gemma Johnson. The cast also includes Sheaun McKinney as Malcolm Butler, Marcel Spears as Marty Butler, and Skye Townsend as Courtney.

“Playing Gemma for eight years – through marriage, global pandemics, two strikes, motherhood and all the other bits of life – has been an absolute gift, and that is thanks to this incredible cast and crew. Laughing with you every single day has brought me immense joy.”

Amber Stevens West joined the final season in a recurring role as Mercedes, a reality TV star who hires Malcolm to ghostwrite her romance novel. Tracy Morgan also made a guest appearance in an episode titled “Welcome to Family Value,” playing Crutch, a cousin of Calvin’s. That character has since spawned a Paramount+ spinoff series called Crutch, which premiered in November 2025.

Why the Show Is Ending After Eight Seasons

The decision to end The Neighborhood after its eighth season came down to production costs, according to industry reports. As a series in its seventh season with a high-profile cast, the show had become expensive to produce. While it remained a strong ratings performer for CBS, the network and studio worked out new deals with the actors to make one final season possible.

Amy Reisenbach, President of CBS Entertainment, explained the network’s thinking when the final season was announced in early 2025. The network wanted to give the show’s loyal viewers a proper farewell rather than an abrupt ending. The final season order allowed the writers and cast to craft a satisfying conclusion for the characters fans have followed for nearly a decade.

Max Greenfield spoke about the show’s ending during an interview, noting that eight seasons is a remarkable achievement in today’s television landscape. He pointed out that very few shows reach that milestone anymore, and the cast felt grateful to have the opportunity to say goodbye properly rather than disappearing without a final episode.

Storylines Heading Into the Finale

Season 8 has brought significant changes for both families. Dave received surprising news about his job, while Gemma adjusted to their son Grover leaving Walcott Academy and starting high school. At the Butler household, Calvin and Tina became empty nesters with Malcolm moving to Venice Beach and Marty living with Courtney as they co-parent their daughter Daphne.

Malcolm took on a new job as a ghostwriter for a reality star, which has created interesting complications in his life. Marty and Courtney’s relationship has continued to develop as they figure out parenting together. The final episodes will wrap up these storylines while giving each character a proper sendoff.

How to Watch The Neighborhood Series Finale

The series finale of The Neighborhood will air on CBS on Monday, May 18, 2026, at 8:00 PM ET/PT. For viewers who cannot watch live, the episode will be available to stream on Paramount+ starting the following day. The streaming service also offers all previous episodes of the series, allowing new viewers to catch up before the final episode.

International audiences can check local CBS affiliates or Paramount+ availability in their regions for broadcast and streaming options. The show has been distributed in multiple countries throughout its run, and the finale is expected to be available through similar channels worldwide.

The final season consists of 20 episodes, with the finale serving as the concluding chapter of the series. The cast and crew have described the final episode as a fitting end to the story, giving fans closure while celebrating the journey the characters have taken since the Johnson family first moved onto the block in 2018.
