The year 2026 has completely changed how the Indian film industry looks at adult-rated movies. What used to be a worrying label for filmmakers and distributors has now become a mark of bold storytelling that audiences actually want to watch. From the violent streets of Mirzapur to the spy-filled world of Dhurandhar, from Hollywood horror to Christopher Nolan’s epic, A-rated films have dominated the box office like never before.
Mirzapur The Movie, Obsession, Dhurandhar The Revenge, and The Odyssey have all proven that an ‘A’ certificate does not scare away viewers. In fact, it might be bringing them in.
Mirzapur The Movie Brings the Gangs to Theatres
The most recent example of this success story is Mirzapur The Movie, which arrived in cinemas on September 4, 2026. The film, directed by Gurmeet Singh and produced by Excel Entertainment, takes the popular Amazon Prime Video series to the big screen.
The numbers speak for themselves. On its first day, the film collected ₹25.75 crore net in India. Day 2 saw a jump to ₹31 crore. By the end of its opening weekend, Mirzapur The Movie had earned ₹93.75 crore net in India and ₹132 crore worldwide. According to Sacnilk, the film’s total India net collection reached ₹56.75 crore in just two days.
The film became the third-biggest Hindi opening of 2026, only behind Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar 2 and Sunny Deol’s Border 2. It also entered the top 10 highest-grossing Hindi films of the year, sitting in the 8th spot with a worldwide gross of ₹132 crore. By day 4, the film’s worldwide gross had reached ₹154.05 crore.
The movie features an ensemble cast including Pankaj Tripathi as Kaleen Bhaiya, Ali Fazal as Guddu Pandit, Divyenndu as Munna Tripathi, and Jitendra Kumar as Bablu Pandit. With a runtime of 3 hours and 17 minutes, the film received an ‘A’ certificate from the CBFC.
Obsession: Hollywood Horror Faces Indian Cuts
Obsession, the Hollywood horror film directed by Curry Barker, arrived in Indian theatres on May 29, 2026. The film stars Michael Johnston and Inde Navarrette in lead roles. It currently holds the title of the highest-rated horror movie of 2026 on Rotten Tomatoes.
Despite receiving an ‘A’ certificate, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) ordered several cuts before approving the film for release. The board removed 38 seconds of footage, including 24 seconds of extreme violence and 14 seconds of graphic sexual activity. A visual containing nudity was also removed.
The decision triggered strong reactions online. One X user wrote:
“The Censor board sucks @CBFC_India. Just Watched Obsession from Cinepolis, Kerala. Due to substantiate cuts on violence & a sex scene (mind you – for an A rated movie!), major part of the plot was missed.”
Another viewer questioned the logic behind the edits:
“What’s Wrong with CBFC. CBFC have trimmed 38 Seconds of Footage from Obsession, and given it an ‘A’ Certificate. What’s the point of giving ‘A’ certificate if you have to trim and mute the sequences.”
The uncensored version of Obsession was reportedly released on OTT from June 2, 2026.
Dhurandhar The Revenge: The Biggest Blockbuster of the Year
Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge, directed by Aditya Dhar and starring Ranveer Singh, set the box office on fire when it released on March 19, 2026. The spy thriller features R Madhavan, Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Dutt, Sara Arjun, and Rakesh Bedi in key roles.
The film collected ₹43 crore from paid previews alone. On its opening day, it earned ₹102.55 crore net in India. The worldwide total on day 1 reached ₹236.63 crore. By the end of its first week, the film had collected ₹674.17 crore. In just two weeks, it crossed the ₹1,500 crore mark worldwide.
Dhurandhar The Revenge became the first Hindi film and only the third Indian movie to cross the 10 billion-rupee mark in domestic takings, achieving the feat after 18 days. As of six weeks after release, the film had collected ₹1,138.71 crore net and ₹1,362.81 crore gross in India.
The nearly four-hour-long film saw massive occupancy, crossing 70% during the first weekend. It also performed well beyond Hindi-speaking markets, with Kerala alone seeing opening day pre-sales cross ₹1 crore.
The Odyssey: Nolan’s Epic Passes Without Cuts
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey received an ‘A’ certificate from the CBFC with zero cuts. The certificate was issued on July 9, 2026, and the film released in India on July 17, 2026.
The film has a runtime of 172.33 minutes (2 hours, 52 minutes and 33 seconds). Nolan held the official premiere in Mumbai on July 10, with actors Tom Holland and Matt Damon in attendance. The film was released in multiple formats, including IMAX 2D and 4DX.
During the Mumbai premiere, Nolan told the audience:
“I am coming to Mumbai again! This is not the first time I am here in Mumbai. But it is the first time that we get the chance to launch a film here. So you are among the first audiences in the world to see this film!”
He added:
“Every time we come here, it’s very, very special. For many years, I have wanted to come here and launch one of our films and experience it with the Indian audiences, who are some of the most enthusiastic and knowledgeable cinematic audiences in the world.”
The Odyssey grossed ₹56.85 crore in its opening weekend in India.

Why A-Rated Films Are Winning Big
Trade analysts believe the success of A-rated films in 2026 marks a major shift in how Indian audiences consume cinema. Taran Adarsh, a well-known trade analyst, explained that the ‘A’ certificate no longer hurts a film’s chances at the box office.
“I don’t think there is much issue with that if the film does require such sequences. Take Dhurandhar, the A certificate didn’t change the film’s fate, it worked because of its content. The public knew it was an adult rated film, yet they still went to theatres and made it the biggest hit of Indian cinema.”
He added that a U certificate is not a guarantee for success. “It all depends on whether the film is good or not.”
Komal Nahta, another trade analyst, pointed out that the ‘A’ certificate sometimes adds curiosity value.
“There was so much discourse around the foul language and adult scenes in Animal (2023), and I thought that it added about ₹100 crore to the collection because that is the way the youth today uses it. So, they felt vindicated seeing an A-list actor doing what they do in real life.”
Nahta added that the success of these films will push filmmakers to work without feeling restricted. He also noted that in tier 2 and tier 3 cities, age restrictions are not strictly followed, with 14-15 year olds watching A-rated films.
Atul Mohan, another trade analyst, credited OTT platforms for changing how filmmakers approach content.
“The makers see that raw and gritty content works on OTT and when they come for certification, this argument comes that if it is allowed there, why not on the big screen. The success of such content on the web has made film makers braver and bolder too. They are not ready to compromise on storytelling for a UA certification’s sake.”
Akkshay Rathie, Director of Ashirwad Theatres Pvt Ltd, said the business concern has reduced for distributors and exhibitors. He credited the boom of A-rated successes to Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal (2023).
“Only when a certain section of the audience shows enough traction and generates revenue, it encourages filmmakers to push the envelope. That has happened with the success of Animal and resulted in many more A rated films.”
The trend shows no signs of slowing down. With Mirzapur The Movie still running strong in theatres and more A-rated films on the horizon, 2026 is shaping up to be the year when adult certification became a badge of honor rather than a barrier.
