Marshals Season 2 is officially here, and while Kayce Dutton may have left the Yellowstone Ranch behind, he cannot seem to escape his family. The CBS spinoff, which premiered on October 4, 2026, is pulling its emotional weight from a familiar source: the death of John Dutton. Even though Kevin Costner‘s character is no longer alive in the Yellowstone universe, his presence is felt in almost every corner of Marshals Season 2. The show is not just about a cowboy turned U.S. Marshal chasing bad guys. It is about a son who is terrified of turning into his late father.

The Ghost of John Dutton Looms Over Kayce and Tate

Yellowstone fans will remember that John Dutton was killed off-screen during the final season, and his death left a deep scar on the Dutton family. In Marshals, that scar is still very fresh. Kayce Dutton, played by Luke Grimes, is raising his son Tate (Brecken Merrill) on his own after the death of his wife Monica (Kelsey Asbille). Yet the show has made a surprising choice. Instead of focusing on Monica’s absence, the first few episodes of Season 2 keep circling back to John Dutton‘s grave and his complicated legacy.

In the Season 2 premiere titled “All Hat No Cattle,” which picks up right after the Season 1 cliffhanger, Tate is kidnapped by Tom Weaver, a man who wants the East Camp land. Kayce goes rogue to save his son, and the violent showdown ends with John Dutton‘s simple grave sitting quietly on the property. Tate visits his grandfather’s grave and questions the family legacy. The teenager even compares the man who kidnapped him to his late grandfather, a comment he quickly regrets. This moment shows just how much John Dutton‘s shadow still hangs over both father and son.

Kayce Is Worried He Is Becoming His Father

Luke Grimes has been very open about what Season 2 explores for Kayce. He told USA TODAY at the Marshals Season 2 premiere in Las Vegas that his character is noticing some uncomfortable patterns. “The last thing [Kayce] wants is to become is his father, but he’s definitely noticing a pattern,” Grimes said. “Kayce and John butted heads a lot, and now Kayce and Tate are sort of butting heads. A lot of what happens this season is [Kayce] trying to fix that and nip that in the bud before it becomes exactly like his relationship with his father.”

This fear of turning into John Dutton is the emotional engine of Season 2. Kayce spent much of Yellowstone fighting with his father, and now he sees the same anger and stubbornness rising up in his own son. The show uses John Dutton‘s grave as a visual reminder of the mistakes Kayce does not want to repeat.

Showrunner Says Kayce Is Wrestling With a Mental Prison

The second episode, titled “End of Watch,” digs even deeper into Kayce‘s struggle. The showrunner Spencer Hudnut explained to TVLine that Kayce is dealing with a mental prison that is worse than any actual jail. Tom Weaver may be behind bars, but Kayce is trapped by the fear that he is becoming the very man he spent years fighting.

Spencer Hudnut shared that Kayce is “still wrestling with John Dutton‘s ghost” in Season 2, and that the character’s worst nightmare is coming true: he is slowly turning into his father. The episode features a fugitive who is scratching names off a hit list after getting fired from his job, and Kayce has to deescalate a dangerous situation by speaking from the heart. The showrunner noted that Kayce tells the fugitive’s loyal son, “He was flawed, but you loved him anyway,” a line that clearly mirrors Kayce‘s own complicated feelings about John Dutton.

Luke Grimes Has Not Talked to Kevin Costner Since Yellowstone

Luke Grimes was asked if Kevin Costner might ever appear in Marshals through a flashback or vision. His answer was honest and a bit surprising. Grimes told USA TODAY that he has not spoken to Costner since their Yellowstone days ended. “Not for any other reason than, you know, we’re both busy guys and life moves on,” Grimes said.

While Grimes said it would be “cool” to work with Costner again, he doubts it will happen. He also revealed that if the show ever did a flashback, he would rather it be with Monica than John. “I think that’d be more poignant to the character,” he explained. This quote shows that Grimes understands the heart of the story. Kayce‘s grief for his wife may be quieter, but it runs just as deep.

John Dutton’s Legacy Is Bigger Than One Grave

The Marshals Season 2 trailer made it clear that John Dutton‘s grave would be a major image in the new season. Kayce is seen standing at the grave in a quiet moment, reflecting that “no Dutton man should become their father.” This single line captures the entire emotional conflict of Season 2. Kayce wants to protect Tate from the same cycle of anger and loss that defined his own relationship with John.

Jefferson White Returns as Jimmy Hurdstrom

One of the biggest pieces of news for Yellowstone fans is the return of Jefferson White as Jimmy Hurdstrom. White joined the cast of Marshals Season 2 in a recurring role, as confirmed by Paramount on September 23. Jimmy was last seen at the 6666 Ranch in Texas during the Yellowstone series finale. Fans were hoping for a 6666 spinoff, but Taylor Sheridan confirmed on the Rodeo Time podcast that the show would not happen. “There’s never going to be one; I would never fictionalize that ranch,” Sheridan said.

Jefferson White shared his excitement in a statement: “I’m thrilled to dive into the world of Marshals and continue exploring the American West. The cast and crew are stacked full of my favorite actors and filmmakers, and I’m honored to join them. Jimmy and I have been through a lot together and I can’t wait to see what’s next for us.” Luke Grimes told reporters that he and showrunner Spencer Hudnut wanted to “delight the audience” by bringing back such a “universally loved” character.
