The Hulu comedy-drama Alice and Steve dropped its entire first season on June 8, 2026. The show follows Alice (Nicola Walker) and Steve (Jemaine Clement), two best friends in their 50s whose relationship explodes when Steve starts dating Alice’s 26-year-old daughter, Izzy (Yali Topol Margalith). Across six episodes, Alice tries everything to break them up. But the finale ends with a massive fire and a jump off a roof, leaving viewers with one big question: did Alice and Steve survive?
The Wedding Rehearsal Turns Into Chaos
The finale takes place at a old manor where Steve and Izzy plan to get married. But nothing goes smoothly. Earlier in the day, Alice points a gun at Steve during a hunting activity. Steve panics and tells Izzy, but she does not believe him. Alice denies it completely, making Steve look paranoid.
At the rehearsal dinner, Alice keeps interrupting Steve’s speech. She asks Izzy what happens when Steve turns 80 and she is only 50. The dinner gets worse when Janis, Izzy’s ex-boyfriend, shows up. Izzy had texted him about the wedding. Janis tells Izzy he loves her and reminds her that she is pregnant with his baby. Izzy kisses him briefly before pulling away.
Izzy Has Doubts About the Wedding
Throughout the finale, Izzy starts questioning her choices. She cannot believe her mother would point a gun at Steve. But she also cannot understand why Steve would make up such a story. The doubt makes her realize she might be rushing into marriage with someone she does not fully know.
Steve also feels the pressure. His father talks to him about marriage, and Steve gets overwhelmed. He puts on headphones and blasts music to block out the noise.
A Candle Starts a Deadly Fire
While Steve hides in his room, Dom (Tyrese Eaton-Dyce) and his girlfriend Rome (Eilidh Fisher) get intimate in their room. They accidentally knock over a candle, and the old manor catches fire fast.
Everyone escapes except Steve. Nobody notices he is missing at first. But Alice realizes he is still inside. She runs back into the burning building while everyone else watches from outside.
Alice and Steve Jump Off the Roof
Alice finds Steve still listening to music, completely unaware of the fire. He thinks she has come to kill him. She convinces him otherwise, and they try to escape. But the fire blocks every exit.
They climb out a window onto the roof. With no other choice, they decide to jump. Alice says she cannot afford to lose both her daughter and her best friend. Steve promises he truly loves Izzy. They hold hands and leap. The screen freezes mid-air. Viewers never see if they survive.
The Creator Wants a Season 2
Sophie Goodhart, the creator of Alice and Steve, knows exactly what happens after that jump. She told Radio Times that she has already decided on the ending. But she also admitted that a second season depends on how popular the show becomes.
“If it doesn’t [prove popular], then yes, it will be an ambiguous ending,” Goodhart said. “Tell everyone to watch it, so that I get some more money.”
A second season would need to address the cliffhanger. If Alice and Steve survive, they would likely face serious injuries. The show would also need to resolve whether Steve and Izzy still want to get married after Izzy kissed Janis and Steve realized he might not truly love her.
Fan Reactions and Critical Response
The show has been called a “wrong-com” because the premise is uncomfortable. One critic wrote that watching Alice and Steve feels both entertaining and queasy at the same time. The age gap between Steve and Izzy is a major point of discussion. Steve has known Izzy since she was a child, which adds another layer of discomfort.
Actor Yali Topol Margalith defended her character Izzy. She told Radio Times that Izzy is not a villain. She simply does not understand her mother’s feelings because Alice has always supported her before. “If you believe something and it’s normal to you, then eventually people start believing you too,” Margalith said.
Nicola Walker described the show as a bomb going off in everyone’s lives. “No one comes out unscathed. No one comes out clean, or as a winner,” she said.
