The character of Wonder Man is preparing for a major introduction. Known in the comics as Simon Williams, he will make his live-action debut in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe series, Wonder Man, scheduled for release on January 27, 2026. Marvel has officially confirmed the core powers this new hero will bring to the screen: super strength, super speed, and the ability to create massive explosions. While these three abilities will be central to the Disney+ show, the comic book version of Wonder Man possesses a much deeper and more complex set of powers that place him among Marvel’s most formidable heroes.
This hero’s journey from a reluctant villain to a mainstay Avenger is as unique as his abilities. Understanding Wonder Man means looking at both the upcoming MCU portrayal and the rich history from the pages of Marvel Comics.
Who is Simon Williams? The Man Behind the Powers
Before he was a hero, Simon Williams was a man facing desperate circumstances. The son of industrialist Sanford Williams, Simon inherited his father’s company, Williams Innovations. Struggling to compete with Tony Stark’s Stark Industries, Simon made a terrible mistake. On the advice of his brother, Eric Williams, he embezzled company funds and was caught.
Facing prison, Simon was given a way out by the villain Baron Heinrich Zemo. Zemo offered Simon superhuman powers through a painful ionic ray treatment. In return, Simon would infiltrate the Avengers as a mole for Zemo’s Masters of Evil. To ensure his loyalty, Zemo lied, telling Simon the process would kill him without a weekly antidote that only Zemo could provide.
Simon accepted and was transformed into Wonder Man. He joined the Avengers, but their kindness and respect changed him. When the time came to betray them, Simon instead turned on Zemo, saving the Avengers. He collapsed immediately after, appearing to die from the lack of Zemo’s “antidote”. In reality, he entered a deep coma as his body completed its transformation into a new, ionic state.
His apparent death had lasting consequences. His brother Eric, driven mad by grief, became the super-villain Grim Reaper, dedicating himself to destroying the Avengers. Furthermore, the Avenger Hank Pym recorded Simon’s brain patterns, which were later stolen by the robot Ultron. Ultron used these patterns to create the foundational personality for the android Vision, creating a permanent, brother-like link between Wonder Man and the Vision.
Years later, Simon’s body was fully revived. He awoke, joined the Avengers in earnest, and began a long career as both a superhero and a successful Hollywood actor and stuntman.
Wonder Man’s Core Powers in the Comics
Wonder Man’s powers stem from his ionic energy physiology. This means his body is no longer standard flesh and blood but is composed of and sustained by ionic energy. This fundamental change grants him a wide array of abilities that make him an Avengers heavy-hitter.
- Superhuman Strength: Wonder Man possesses vast strength, officially classified as being able to lift in excess of 100 tons. This places him in the same tier as powerhouses like Thor and the Hulk. He has demonstrated this strength by overpowering foes like the Red Hulk and toppling giant enemies.
- Superhuman Durability and Invulnerability: His ionic body makes him nearly indestructible. He is immune to conventional weapons, extreme temperatures, and does not need food, water, or air to survive. This durability allowed him to work as a Hollywood stuntman, performing feats that would kill a normal person.
- Flight and Super Speed: Wonder Man can fly at speeds exceeding 700 miles per hour. His reflexes and agility are also enhanced far beyond human limits, allowing him to react and move at superhuman speeds.
- Enhanced Senses: His vision extends beyond the normal human spectrum, and his hearing is significantly heightened. His eyes typically glow with shifting ionic energy, a visible sign of his power.
Advanced and Latent Abilities
Beyond his core power set, Wonder Man has displayed other impressive, though sometimes less consistent, abilities.
- Energy Manipulation and Projection: He can discharge his ionic energy in powerful blasts from his eyes or hands. He can also use this energy to create explosive forces on impact.
- Healing Factor and Reformation: Due to his energy-based form, Wonder Man can recover from injuries that would be fatal to others. In some stories, his body can even reform after being dispersed.
- Size and Shape Alteration: At times when his powers were destabilized, Wonder Man has shown the ability to grow to a giant size or alter his physical appearance.
- Power Recycling and Immunity: A unique aspect of his physiology is the ability to recycle energy. This makes him immune to certain types of threats, such as Symbiote infection (like Venom or Carnage), because they require standard biological tissue to bond with.
The MCU’s Wonder Man: A Focused Power Set
The live-action adaptation for Disney+ will streamline this vast array of powers into three key confirmed abilities that will drive the story.
- Super Strength
- Super Speed
- The Ability to Create Massive Explosions
Showrunner Andrew Guest described the MCU’s Simon Williams as “incredibly powerful in a way that even he is not fully aware of.” Marvel Studios executive Brian Gay added that Simon “doesn’t even know the extent of what his powers are,” because his primary focus is not on being a hero, but on becoming a respected actor.
“He doesn’t even know the extent of what his powers are. Simon has these superpowers and feels a responsibility to help, but his main goal is to be an actor.” – Brian Gay, Marvel Studios Director of Production and Development
This creates the central conflict for the series. Simon Williams, portrayed by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, is an aspiring actor in Hollywood who happens to have incredible abilities. The show is set to explore his journey as he auditions for a role in a movie remake of “Wonder Man” alongside the returning, struggling actor Trevor Slattery, played by Ben Kingsley.
Actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has hinted that the series will have a meta, self-aware tone. He stated it will include “commentary about superhero fatigue,” but emphasized that at its heart, the show is about an actor’s journey and the development of a friendship.

How Wonder Man Compares to Other Marvel Heroes
With his power set, Wonder Man stands among the upper tier of Marvel’s heroes in terms of raw capability.
- Strength Class: His ability to lift over 100 tons officially ranks him alongside Thor, Hulk, and Sentry in the super-heavyweight category.
- Durability: His ionic invulnerability provides a different kind of resilience compared to armored heroes like Iron Man or mystical defenses like Doctor Strange’s shields. He has survived in the vacuum of space and through massive explosions without injury.
- Versatility: While not a cosmic entity like Captain Marvel or a master sorcerer like Scarlet Witch, Wonder Man’s combination of strength, flight, speed, and energy projection makes him an exceptionally versatile combatant. He is also a skilled hand-to-hand fighter, having received combat training from Captain America himself.
The Wonder Man series is scheduled to release all eight episodes on Disney+ on January 27, 2026. It will be part of the MCU’s Phase Six and will be released under the “Marvel Spotlight” banner, which typically indicates a more character-driven, standalone story.
